Indeed, context is apparently important. Without that, knowing who and what you are chatting with, anything can seem empty and void of substance.

Though to be fair even when posts fall foul of the "semi banned" list, I always find if you explain the context to TPTB then they invariably re-instate my posts.

True. There have been occassional bits of individual personality with "TPTB", but any reasonable reply to a has typically been met with reason. And a way around 'filtering' if justified by intent and context.

I'm new. I've posted a few discussions to ask h2g2 and got very little response. To be honest you all seem more interested in discussing 'in-crowd' stuff, and not that interested in posting to the new people's questions.

I found that as a newbie all those years ago Gnatty, but Ask's just a madhouse full of mad people! What you need to do is find a nice society full of equally-mad people where you can get a word in edgeways!

One of the wonderful things about h2g2 is that it's always possible to get a word in edgeways. True, it may be ignored, but at least you can say it.
This is my first posting on this conversation. I'd read about half way through it before abandoning it, and when it was revived and jumped up on my conversation list I read the rest of it. And now I'm here at the end, trying to say something intelligent.
I try to keep an eye on Ask (and The Forum, and Peer Review, and the AWW, ...). And I usually post on-topic. And while I've been here long enough to get most of the in jokes, I almost never make them myself.
But I still lurk far more than I post. One thing I enjoy doing is lurking in other people's conversation list. It's a good way to find interesting parts of the site. Lurking in other people's message centres and journals is a bit more like sneaking, but they're open to public view and they can be a good way to understand some of the interpersonal dynamics of the regular participants. Do keep an eye on the dates, though, as many opinions expressed may change.
TRiG.

That might have been the point I was making!
Certainly as a newcomer one of the things that put you off posting is the fact that your posts tend to be ignored so more established posters can reply to each other "over your head" so to speak.
When you get used to it, just just learn to time your posts to fit in those little lulls between the camaraderie and the mad badger extravaganza.

Hiya Gnatty,
It is one of the annoying things about hootoo. I am something of an old hand now and occasionally still feel as if I am being ignored. Usually prompting some huffy trolling on my part just to get noticed .
What sort of things do you like? Joining in CLubs and Societies is a good way to get to know people. The VSC (Virtual Supporters Club) for hootoo footy fanatics is where I cut my teeth back in the day... A243677
Though there are quite a few in jokes (and Psycorp baiting ) we are a quite freindly and welcoming bunch.

Gnatty, you said you weren't getting many responces to your threads but I just looked at what seems to be the main one and there were 20 posts when you said you weren't getting many replies. Actually 20 posts can be a lot of posts on here, I have threads die after one or two replies. It is nothing to do with whether you are new or not as to whether you get replies, I actually rarely look at who posted new thread and only answer if I have any knowledge of subject or am interested. Some subjects can only go so far, a thread like "What just happend?" is a self perpetuating thread as something has always just happened, it can also die for a couple of weeks then revive.
The main reason for not getting replies is people aren't really interested in subject of new thread or have no experience or opinion.

I don't post here that much, never have really.
I found the system for getting stuff into the EG slow, demoralising (and ultimately futile - I gave up on that aspect of things). Editing existing articles where I found inaccuracies even worse. Combine that with what I perceived as a social hierarchy based on EG contribution, and it rather dissuaded me from posting, when places like wiki or the BBC MBs could fulfil similair rolls.
I do still like it here, and keep getting drawn back though.

However, there is always the unedited guide. I tried to get something in the edited guide once and gave up too. When looking for something I never actually look to see if it is in the edited guide just if it is the most suitable for what I need. Personally I would rather not have strangers coming along and mess with my entries anyway.
