Btw when I said "What..." threads, I didn't mean this one. I mean the types that go along the lines of "What is your belt doing at the moment?", "What shall I do with this pen?" etc
Oh I so with you on that one...Or the games ones.Or the badger and nighthoover ones.

I don't mind the badgers and night hoovering activities, you can use your imagination in those and be
But the "what..."s are just so dull and boring
So, I decided to spice them all up with a bit of silliness tonight

I don't really think that there's any shortage of serious intellegent conversation on h2g2. I think the problem on h2g2 is finding them.
I have a proposal, a modest one of course.
I think we should have a thread of the month award.
We should all nominate the threads that we've most enjoyed taking part in the previous month, silly or intellgent, funny or serious. Whatever.
And the thread that gets the most votes gets linked to on the front page, and added to the 'Thread of the month' award archives.
Or I could start it up as a regular colum in the post..
Say, er, once a month?

You can call me TC Posted Jun 5, 2005
I remember suggesting that before Rupert. No, hang on, it was just after Rupert where people had gone mad holding all sorts of polls as you can in Yahoo threads which we did during that time. I was told it wasn't technically feasible (at the time) on hootoo.
Still, just a loose poll in the form of a thread on Ask is, of course, quite possible. Not that one of those ever actually produced any results, as it goes off at a tangent three quarters of the way down the first page, then a few more join, and it finally derails entirely by about post 25.
My idea was that we had a poll every week, on exterior things like "Best black and white film ever" or "Best album of the 70s", "Top ten researchers' book list" etc. or with polls from hootoo such as "best thread" "best personal space" "club of the week" - whatever.
There are probably lots of fascinating threads that I've never looked at because they have a different title or even .
There's one in my own journal for example called "New Glasses" which is mainly a discussion about how prices have gone up since the introduction of the Euro.

Thread polls don't work? They seem to for deciding the winner of bikini competition, arranging meetups, and the conclusions from the Liv Tyler or George Formby thread lead me to believe that a fair few members of h2g2 (myself included) probably escaped from their local funny farm.
Yeah on second thoughts I see what you mean
What puts me off posting is the abject fear of putting my foot in it, something I seem to be doing more and more in real life as well as here.

It's a shame that the 'Thread of the Day' page seems to have been abandoned:

On the subject of polls and...stuff...
On another messageboard there is a kind of Member of the Week thread, where basically you vote for the member of the week and then you get to ask them lots of questions.
Which is nice...

I see it as a regular post article to be honest - on a once a month basis, saying what the best thread of the previous month was..
We don't have to have a thread poll.. I could easily set up a yahoo address for people to e mail me on?
And things like this are another reason why we need

As many other folk have already posted, I am put off from posting by a huge backlog as I don’t often have the time to read through it. Posting without reading it all seems rude so sometimes if I see a thread with lots of postings I just unsubscribe or lurk, usually with feeling of regret as these are often the interesting topics but I just don’t have the time to cope with the backlog. I have found it hard to get to know people, probably because I don’t get a chance to post very often, and when I do these posts are often rushed. I still enjoy it though and its the highlight of my day along with my morning or afternoon

It was quite a fluid thread I think. One that got a bit DW derailed for a bit but ended up quite interesting...

Rev Nick { Only the dead are without fear } Posted May 21, 2007
When this thread began, there were a couple of things that put me off. The emptiness of the ASK threads, where-in the same handful of folks ran off with every subject, down familiar silly lines. And the (self-percieved) moral and intellectual superiority of a small number of folks in The Forum, who turned every debate into a science-is-great-and-religious-believers-are-stupid cycle. Now, it's mostly a lack of time, and inability to sign-in during my work day. But having a thick hide, if I now have something that I feel needs saying, reguardless of how important someone else might see themselves, I'm not shy about posting.
Mind, many of the more annoying folks did flounce away with the inclusion of that filter ... The one that many took as a personal affront.

I think now, and thought at the time that the filter was incredibly badly handled.
Not least the way TPTB descended on us and told (what seemed at least to me) the previously unaware community of what a massive problem profanity was and that we were going to have a new filter.
God damn that was annoying.
Also the silly interpretation, like how you could not even allude to swear words in a way they do on saturday morning kids TV. It was handled badly even if its inclusion has not really caused that much of a problem for the site.

Effers;England. Posted May 21, 2007
People have frequently complained about the profanity filter because it's utterly incapable of appreciating context.
But I find it not half as irritaing as some half witted humanoids one finds on h2g2, who are equally inacapable of understanding context.
Key: Complain about this post
