What puts people off posting on h2g2?

I'm inclined to think that starting a thread about what you call 'Della wars' would just give unneccessary publicity for the people concerned. I recall when we had problems with Liam, the discussion thread was moved out of h2g2 for that reason.

From Z-
"The Della wars seem to be going strong in The Forum, but they don't affect anyone other than the particpants, who all seem to be rather enjoying it. You can easily avoid them."

Thanks for clearing up Z.
You are Right.
Yes I have "easily avoided them" though the war tends to travel.
I have lost interest in h2 because of it.

I realise I am no loss to the forum but consider this possibilty.
More elequent and intelligent persons may have been turned off.
Maybe not.
Maybe it does not matter to the forum even if true.

How would you know without it being brought up?
The thread is " what puts people off posting?"

I was *guessing somebody besides me has been put off in this particular way. Others may be having the best time of their lives reading it.

Humm..

Hi abbi.

Im to be one of the Guardians of The Forum, althought it was started by Acid Overide (who was a real life friend of mine) I spent a lot of time promoting the forum. I made sure that it was linked to, I made sure we had artwork, in the early days I made sure that there were always interesting conversations by starting them myself. It's one of my 'h2g2 babies'.

If it's been damaged by The Della wars then I consider it a failing of mine. I want to do something about them, but I'm not sure what.

Thanks for the consideration.
Maybe another thread for opinions on the Forum would be good for you to do Z.
Mine is only one opinion.

Yup, maybe, I'm not sure what I can do, because I don't have editing rights to The Forum at the moment.

I could try and acquire the editing rights, then I could change the text on the page, or become the offical Guardian.

*thinks*

Humm...

No, no, 1000 times no!!! I don't enjoy it, I am not a willing participant, and I resent people saying that I do.What will it take for the uninvolved to believe me about that?
The whole ridiculous mess has soured h2g2 for me, and the pity is, it's all down to a rather odd little clique around one guy with issues, and a few of his followers.

"I don't enjoy it, I am not a willing participant"

Gosh. Who is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to post here, Della? I think we should be told...

"I don't enjoy it... What will it take for the uninvolved to believe me about that?"

Suggestion 1: don't, in a thread where there is no "war" going on, post a link to one where there is and tell people to go and look at it. This draws people's attention to it. I have, I think, never done that. You have, within the last few days. It's very much an attention-seeking tactic, as is, I believe, your entire persona on h2g2.

Suggestion 2: stop, if you can, as many as possible of the following behaviours:

- making sweeping generalisations or stating outright falsehoods and then claiming they are facts
- shrilly denouncing people who post reputable links to the real facts as "liars"
- posting prejudiced generalised abuse, especially about residents of the USA
- espousing deeply conservative views while simultaneously claiming not to be a conservative
- engaging in fallacious arguments in a vain attempt to "win" discussions. A favourite technique is ad hominen, for example: "a rather odd little clique around one guy with issues". I have "issues" only with the above.

Observers please note, this is an on-topic response to a question posed within the thread. I have no particular wish to continue what has been characterised as a "war". A direct question was asked, I have given the answer, there it ends here unless another question is posed or another comment made which requires response.

Thank you.

H.

Hmm. Why do I have an odd feeling that discussing this subject is only going to move the fight to this thread...

I would say that it is impossible to think that "The community" could have any kind of a constructive discussion on the topic with the participants being involved in some way.

I would also argue that say... me or anyone else involed merely talking about the events and the circumstances around them do not constitute engaging in "Della Wars". All the people involved are adults and as far as I know all contribute in other places on hootoo with no trouble whatsoever.

Abbi, I certainly think you *are* a loss to The Forum if you have stopped reading and posting there because of the D wars smiley - sadface. I am glad you have spoken and said what you have.

I'd like to think about how best to start a thread on this elsewhere - thanks for the feedback and comments. I'll post a link in this thread in a day or so.

Can I make a request that we drop this from this thread now? I understand that people want to reply to what they see as unfair posts, but really if the war continues here it's just going to piss people off. Talking about talking about the war is a brief adjunct to the thread's topic. Engaging in the war is off topic totally (unless one acknowledges the irony), or at least inflammatory. You can always go to researchers' Personal Spaces if necessary.

>>Can I make a request that we drop this from this thread now?<< That seems to be a very good suggestion, because it puts me off posting here or anywhere else if it's all only about the so-called wars- and I'm not even a newbie. smiley - smiley

It's redundant, but I'll say it anyway. Quite often, by the time I see a discussion of interest, any notions I might have expressed have already been there. So I sit back and wait for it to turn into a thread about science vs religion. The interesting threads always do, somehow.

Do they ? Apparently I've never stayed long enough then, must have been put off by personal disputes before a thread turned into the discussion you mentioned.

I've seen a lot of threads that weren't light and fluffy turn that way. Oddly enough, by the same folk that like their personal wars. Then I just move on to something else.

There you go, ... the same intolerance to others having a belief-system, that cause real wars and strife about the world, is a turn off in the threads. At least to me.

Well look guys if you want us to not respond then you have to stop talking about the Wars.

I am subscribed to this topic because I am interested in it and I have made lots of "on topic" postings. But if we want it to stay on topic then well all have to keep it that way see?

Just out of curiousity FB, why did you start that thread when I had said I was going to?

Well I thought you said you were thinking about it.

I am enjoying this thread and to be honest I was getting a little fed up with the way it had gone for the last dot or so re Della wars and that.

I checked to see if a thread had been started up yet and it hadn't so I started one. I just hoped that would mean we could draw a line under it and get on with this discussion.

I am sorry if you feel I tread on your toes as this was not my intention. Given the time (you are in the southern hemisphere right?) I was not sure if a new thread would start today.

Once again I am sorry if I have wronged you by starting that thread.
