I have a video of Live's - 'Overcome' showing footage of the day, very moving!
Reminds me of The Cars - 'Drive' when used at LiveAid

I could find loads if I trawled my CD collection, but one that always evokes a haunting sense of loss to me is Julia, by Eurythmics, from 1984: For The Love Of Big Brother.

I find it absolutely incredible that I am the only person on HooToo who can find a piece of Classical Music sad! Either I am the only one who listens to that 'Stuff' here, or I am the only one moved by it!
Oh well! It juist shows how much modern music has swamped the masses.

Hey, I did mention Barber's Adagio and Elgar's Nimrod.
If you're grieving I'd definitely recommend "When I Die" by Lush. It's beautiful and uplifting at the end. I got a lot of tears out playing it on the guitar after my dad died.

Hi MMF I think there's a difference between finding something 'moving' and finding it 'sad'. Many classical pieces tend to take you on an emotional journey which often includes a bit of sadness.
Do you have anything approaching sad in your domain of folk fiddle music? I couldn't think of any well-known ones off the top of my head.

Well, the question was 'what's the saddest _song_ which does exclude an awful lot of classical stuff. If it had been what's the saddest piece of music then that would be a different story.

I'll admit, as an impressionable teenager, I used to cry every time I heard that!
Along with Bobby Goldsboro's 'Honey'. Darn that tree!!!
But then, I grew up and got over all that!!!

"Ben" by Michael Jackson.
I'm so so sorry. I'm sure there are more worthy ones, but each time I sing along, my voice breaks.

I'd suggest picking an album by Spiritualized and putting it on random play. Probably leaning towards 'Let it flow', 'Spread your wings' or 'Broken heart'. A little obvious perhaps.
Also all of Philophobia by Arab Strap - I can barely even pick the CD case up. Although it is quite funny, it's still so dark and melancholic.

Vincent by Don Mclean is quite moving. Perfect for anyone who's lost a mad Dutch post-impressionist, and we've all been there.

I agree with Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt".
There are all sorts of songs that bring melancholy out in me and that aren't necessarily self-conciously "gloomy". Some memorable ones are:
"Drive" by REM
"Mary" by the Scissor Sisters
"Acrobat" by Maximo Park
"Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley
"Downtown Train" by Tom Waits

1.Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday.
2.Everybody Hurts by REM.
3.Forever Blue by Chris Isaak.
4.Mad World by Gary Jules.
5.Desperado by The Eagles.
Not in any particular order but some ofthe songs that have affected me profoundly.
Oh a version of Smells like Teen Spirit by an High School Orchestra kinda got me too a little while back..it was a very good effort.
There are other songs but I'm off to start another thread about music.

Forgot all about "firestarter" not the original but a cover by a band called Less Than Jake, its really slowed down and sung in a way that puts across a lament of someone unable to control their urges and realises how its affecting them negatively.
The song encapsulates the morning after feeling when you realise that shagging your girlfriends sister, slapping your boss or committing some other self destructive on the spur of the moment wasnt the best idea you have ever had and that you being you you will probably do something similar in the future.
All of the songs on "The Soul Cages" qualify as sad songs, except "Something Wicked This Way Comes" which is understanable as it was written about the loss of his mother and father by Sting. If you can get hold of the live versions played on Northumbrian ppes and other weird old instruments they are even more effective as sad songs.

Everytime i hear 'Puff the magic dragon' i'm willing Jackie not to grow up.....just once.
'Ben' by miggsy Jackson makes me laugh everytime i hear it, as i remember the gawky kid in the film singing to his demonic pet rat
'She's out of my life' by Micheal Jackson is quite sad.
