For me, I'd have to say Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails. Especially if you watch the video.

Last Kiss, the original by Wednesday.
And then probably half of what-ever Red Sovine has recorded.

I saw the thread title and started wondering, then saw the first post and thought 'Yep'.
That video made me cry the first time I saw it.

The first time I saw it I wasn't that impressed. I'd been told how amazing it was and frankly I wasn't blown away.
I watched it again last week and wondered what was wrong with me the first time I saw it.

That would be 'Fotheringay' by Fairport Convention.
Beautiful song, but so sad.

It could have been mawkish but the tears in June Carter-Cash's eyes really ram it home - this is a couple at the end of their days. I'm getting goosebumps thinking about it.

.....got to agree with that Nick. Every one a tear jerker.
'In the Ghetto' by Elvis (Who i normally can't stand) is one that i've always found powerful.

Walking on the Wire - Richard Thompson (he of Fairport Convention)
I think he specialises in sad songs. Infact, *anything* in a minor key by Richard Thompson makes me question if breathing is a good idea if I'm in the wrong humour.
The Johnny Cash song mentioned earlier certainly makes the throat tighten a bit. Very poignant.

Joke answer: Shaddappa Ya Face by Joe Dolce
Sensible answer: No-one Said It Would Be Easy by Sheryl Crow (when she was a proper musician and not a poppy sell-out).

Just watched 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails.
Prefer the Johnny Cash version. Definately a bloke thing though 'cos most women can't stand it.
Goodbye my lover by James Blunt is quite sad.
"Need a little time" by the Beautiful South brings back bad memories
"Come Back to Me" by Big Country gets me every time.

"Goodbye my lover by James Blunt is quite sad. "
Remove the first four words from that sentence and you're spot on.

It's good, but not as good.
I heard Trent Reznor never plays his version now, only the Cash version.

You make it easy - Air (from 'Moon Safari') - though I think that's more for assocations than anything else.
Others ... 'Together Alone' (Crowded House) and 'Everybody Hurts' (REM)

I'm glad I'm not the only one to like 'Everybody Hurts' in this context. I hadn't seen it mentioned, and I posted it with the air of a contestant on QI who fears he is about to say something crushing obvious and set off the siren.
