A thread for researchers to state where they think 'lifting' has occured in any area - music, literature, advertising etc.
Britney Spears songs often sound very similar to other songs. For example, Oops I did it again has a similar melody to Woman In Love by Barbara Streisand. Also another Britney Spears song Overprotected sounds like No More Lonely Nights, by Mcartney.

Erm, that is sampling, which is a world away from plagiarism.

Sampling is pure plagiarism in my view... Not that I have anything against it...

not when it is credited to the original artist lie I am sure the dreadful Ice, Ice Baby was.
There was a Eurovision entrant this year that was a rip off from Sex Bomb
The best one at the moment is Girls Aloud's last single in that it ripped of a guitar break from a Blondie track and Drum/Bass thing from "My Sharona" (?spelling) and the end bit with spoken lyrics a rip off from many transvision Vamp songs. So in one single the made reference to threee records over three decades - very clever as it is instantly famililar to many listeners.

Ok, anyone old enough to remember "Yes! We have no bananas, we have no bananas today."
The only original bit of it is the first word bananas.
The beginning bit is a rip off from the Alleluia Chorus and the ending is from "Bring back my Bonnie to me"
So, singing in tune:
Alleluia - bananas - oh bring back my bonnie to me.

Ah yes, as Tom Lehrer 'sang' :
Plagiarise, plagiarise, plagiarise... but be sure always to call it please.... research!
I think sampling even with credits given where due is *still* plagiarism whether legal or not. Besides, the song was pants. (Vanilla's one, not Queen's)
And they didn't just take one phrase or anything, they took the whole darn bassline...
Which reminds me - Robbie Williams' Millennium plagi... samples the strings off one of the Bond themes, I forget which.

Ok, here's one I just heard on the Radio...
Puretone's 'Addicted to Bass' Steals very heavily from, if not is exactly the same bassline as, 'Super Sharp Shooter' by DJ Hype and the Ganja Crew.
One for all the junglists out there...

Back to the 80s, 'Shake you down' by Gregg Abott has the same chorus melody as 'Cherish' by Kool and the Gang.

'Give thanks with a grateful heart' & the Pet Shop Boys' 'Go West'
I don't know which came first tho.
