I'm just starting this thread, as I am going offline to watch the 1hr 50 minute programme/interview on Michael Jackson...
What do you think of him? I feel a little rude just asking this...but if I don't someone else will!

Nutter. Stark staring mad. Completely self-obsessed.
Yup, and Michael Jackson too!!!
Sorry, Sat, couldn't resist...
Highlight of the last decade was Jarvis Cocker's intervention at the Brits or whatever dull awards event it was...

I agree. It did look like MJ was trying to set himself up as a "christ" figure.
If he likes children so much why doesn't he start up a theme park for kids? Put something back.

Michael Jackson scares me. The fact that he can still walk unassisted on those limbs is a miracle of modern science...
Michael Jackson - Creative influence for Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas? Think about it - Pasty white. Has to wear a wig because he has no hair. No nose. Impossibly long, bony, angular limbs. Traumatises children if he appears in their bedrooms!

you would think with all his money he could afford a good pyschiatrist to sort him out. If he was poor he would be committed as unstable but because he is rich and famous ..he is eccentric.
Michael Jackson
Saturnine Posted Feb 3, 2003
And none of you are ashamed of yourselves for having that attitude? Or is it "OK" because everyone else thinks and says the same?
Just wondering.

Sho - employed again! Posted Feb 3, 2003
well... not many poor and unstable people would get away with holding a nine month baby out over a high balcony. But rich eccentric ones do.
I think he's barmy, but that's just from his actions that the public see. I hate his music and I can't stand his mannerisms and voice.
Pretty much sums it up for me, I couldn't care less though, except if he had dropped that poor little baby.

I don't think being chastised by the international media and being criticised and potentially investigated by child protection services "getting away with it" somehow...
I honestly am astounded that you are saying (paraphrasing here) that "no poor and unstable person would get away with what he is doing"...well for a start, you are criminalising his behaviour. Secondly, what exactly is he doing that is so bad? And thirdly, why the f**k do you all find humour in picking on someone that you think is mentally disturbed?

Tabitca Posted Feb 3, 2003
anyone who behaves in the public eye, as he does, is setting themselves up for criticism. He's not the only one who gets talked about..I've just watched Never mind the Buzzcocks in which Robbie williams got slagged off for his behaviour( dancing nude I think). MJ is just more outlandish in his appearance and his desire to stay looking young and behaving as he does is very sad. However he has the money and means to get sorted out but chooses not to- despite social services taking an interest in his behaviour with his children etc.
If he was poor he would have no choices. He could do alot more good in the world and for him self.I feel no guilt about what i have said.

Saturnine Posted Feb 3, 2003
"anyone who behaves in the public as he does"
And what does he do? Baby-dangling aside...because that was OBVIOUSLY very wrong...
I think this a whole lot of bull. People pick on him because he doesn't fit in a box. Because he's not (quote, unquote) "normal"...
Michael Jackson
Saturnine Posted Feb 3, 2003
Oh, and may I add, that just because social services take an interest in your children, it doesn't make you a bad parent.
All I'm seeing is horrific double standards...
...which wasn't what I was expecting from h2g2 researchers.
Michael Jackson
Tabitca Posted Feb 3, 2003
he is a role model/in the public eye etc. to a lot of people and therefore should have more responsibility or accountability for his actions.Too many people are influenced by famous peoples' behaviour..you only have to look at fashion to see that. I wonder how many copycat baby dangling incidents there have been seen he did it...I don't suppose we will ever know.Just because you have the sense to see it as wrong saturnine doesn't mean everybody else does.

Tabitca Posted Feb 3, 2003
sorry seen should have read since..I've still got a sick I'm nursing on my knee..makes typing difficult.
Michael Jackson
Saturnine Posted Feb 3, 2003
That is utter crap, and you know it.
Pop stars or anyone else are only role models because other people make them. It's *NOT* their responsibility to set an example for anyone else but their children. And aside from the baby dangling incident, which was just a wee-bit overblown, I haven't really seen anything that suggests Michael Jackson behaves irresponsibly.
If you are referring to his obvious image and childhood issues...would you make fun of someone that wasn't in the media spotlight that had the same issues?
As for influence...ppfft. The Beatles influenced the Manson Family murders. Dpes that mean they were responsible? People percieve this differently.
Sure, he has problems. But do you pick on other people with mental/emotional issues? Child stars are notorious for their f**ked up lives. I don't see it as very funny to pick on individuals that have gone through trauma...

you obviously want a fight, and MJ isn't worth it.
And I stand by my claim that here in Germany anyone who didn't have the money for a good lawyer would be visiting their child courtesy of the Jugendamt and not just carrying on (investigations and press brouhaha aside)
But if you want to talk hypocracy: how about a black guy who makes himself look white then sings that it doesn't matter what colour you are...
Michael Jackson
Tabitca Posted Feb 3, 2003
anyone who has put themselves through all that pain and plastic surgery has serious problems and needs help, which he doesn't take. The thing I don't like is him having his skin stripped so he looks white...have you any idea what that says to black teenagers..that you need to be white ..you are not good enough. I have seen teenagers who have washed themselves with bleach to be like MJ...of course he influences people..to say he doesn't is being niaive.
Michael Jackson
Saturnine Posted Feb 3, 2003
I didn't want a fight. I'm just a little... astonsihed of the hypocrisy and double standards. Normally, I see a fair set of opinions being given. Regardless of whether I agree with them or not. This time...not so.
Um, Sho. Do you know what vitaligo (sp?) is? It's a pretty terrible thing for someone to have. Besides, who are you to judge what he looks like? His image is his image. You can't go around defining how others look. That's just rude!!!
