Do you assume a Researchers gender by their nickname?

I do sometimes but mostly I base it on what they say and how they say it. Still I get it wrong sometimes

You'd probably get it wrong with me. I've had this name so long I can't remember why I chose it, and I'm too lazy to come up with anything better.

It depends on the name. A lot of names are asexual, so I don't make any assumptions. A name like 'Foxy Babe' seems female, though, and anything with 'Captain' or 'Admiral' seems male. And no, I don't go and check, so I never know if I'm wrong.

I have news for you Cd-I'm pretty sure that Admiral Articuno is female.
And obviously, Foxy Babe is now discovered as male by dint of asking the question.

I assume all the time. The obvious guesses (if I wasn't thinking too much!) are:
Foxy Babe - F
Apparition - M
Twinkle - F
Pinniped - Hmmmm?
Cheerful Dragon - F
Blues Shark - F
Haven't visited any of your pages, yet, so don't take offence!
Anybody care to hazzard a guess at my gender.
Never thought I'd be saying that!

I find I assume M and they turn out to be F - is that something to do with society?

LOL Blueshark - Just a little joke!
Cloviscat - I agree. It's the whole Blue for a boy, Pink for a girl steriotype.

I don't think anyone's ever made a wrong assumption about me - not about my sex, anyway - but fords_prefect (U183316) has come across the problem, as can be seen from her user space

Trying to guess the sex of 'It's all too much'...
Music teacher - suggests female to me
Has compiled a list of top 10 albums - suggests male
I'd go for male.

Anyway, you were meant to guess from nickname alone!

Queen - is because I stumbled in here via Yahoo Chat, where it is definately preferable to state your gender outright (trust me I spent a short time as "ImDeadScouseMe" and got accused on numerous occasions of necrophilia).
Not to mention that PencilGirl or PencilWoman both sound a little too pervy, and as a Queen it is always possible to freak out someone who is annoying you by claiming to be male...and gay...and very interested in getting to know them better.
Pencil Queen (who used to frequent the military rooms as "HappyGayGuy" to try to get a rise out of someone - a waste of time as it was full of women looking for husbands)

Well I guessed from the PK incident It's all too much...
I've assumed wrong a couple of times and have since stopped assuming...
There was one rather well known researcher who I always assumed was male but Peta revealed otherwise on ACE forum some time back.
That's confidential though
You *can* often tell from the conversations that happen though.
Some seem to care about whether people know their genders, name, etc. online but personally I have no problem with revealing such things if there is a reason to. Each to their own though
Orcus - a demonic sort of bloke

A friend who posts to alt.religion.kibology uses this .sig:
Zixia - "Not a gurl since 1973"
Liam. <- who, despite having letters sent to him that are addressed to Linda Groves which is incorrect in both cases, has never been a gurl.

I do sometimes... when the nicknames are obvious. Other times, assupmtions appear to create themselves after reading a coupple of threads written by certain researches. Whether they are wrong or not, I am not sure about.
I do notice however, that people are really geniouses about getting MY gender wrong.
Key: Complain about this post
