Benjamin Britten's opera 'Peter Grimes'. I didn't think I liked opera until I heard this. Haunting, tragic and utterly beautiful.

Which reminds me of one of the most fantastic cds I have ever heard...
Virgin Black- Sombre Romantic
It is soooo talented... it is amazing. The vocals are haunting opretic with some chant thrown in for good measure. However the rest of the music is more along the "harder" line... esp. the guitars... There is some cello mixed in also.
I could hardly believe my delighted ears the first time I heard this cd. When you here the cd you get the feeling that the band is making music because they love it... not because they want to win the next Grammy Award. Which boosts the credibility of the music in my mind.
peace.

Hi Sue - Pulse is good, of course, and has the advantage of having the live version of Dark Side too. But Wish You Were Here is the one I would get if I could have only one. Rapidly followed by Dark Side, Pulse, Meddle, the Division Bell, A Momentary Lapse of Reason... the list goes on. (Sad aging rock-babe that I am).
Hi Pegasus - it might be good to write it up, but I am wa-a-ay to lazy. Please be my guest.

Great to see that there are so many Pink Floyd fans here! I had an idea that they weren't very popular nowadays. I love PF but I don't think they're quite good enough to be the only CD. However, if they were good enough, I think it might have to be Ummagumma for me, or maybe Atom Heart Mother.

Swing out Sister, "Kaleidoscope World."

One CD is not enough..DVD would be easier, but still not enough.
I have thought of Pink Floyd or Tubular Bells, but I wouldn't be myself to choose anything else but Deep Purple's Made in Japan.

I love PF, but if i could only have 1 I think i would take ´The Doors´ by The Doors, or maybe ´the doors box set, part 2´ if i can get away with a double cd box set thingy....
the thing i like best about this thread is that i own almost all of the albums talked about....

Wow, we're seeing a lot of good old stuff here... It is a tough one, agreed!
(any one caring to try to do a top 10 might want to revive my old page of such lists - it's stuck somewhere in the back-backlog off my space)
Hmmm - "22:17 Live in Aarhus", Blue Junction or "Dream Dancing", Katrine Madsen came close (first is Danish blues, second Danish jazz).
But I'd pick "Getz/Gilberto" - you've guessed - Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto. Cool, very cool

I think I would have the Pixies' Surfer Rosa & Come on Pilgrim. Technically an album and an EP but can only be found on one CD nowadays. Perfect basslines mixed with creamy pre-grunge guitars and including the amazing Where Is My Mind?
...or OK Computer by Radiohead - An emotional rollercoaster full of controlled agression and beautiful music, although I would like Street Spirit from the previous album to go with it.
I reckon I could burn all of this on one CD. Actually could I use mp3s? That way I could fit over 200 tracks on one CD.

Burning CDs is definitely cheating - and as for MP3 - hey, don't just move the goalposts, start playing a different game entirely.
Cricket anyone?

Kudos to Wesley Pipes, with his feet in the air and his head on the ground
I'd probably go with the Pixies Best Of. I've never been able to decide which album was my favourite.
Chris, asking "do you have another 'pinion?"

I like Doolittle.
As, er, that's the only Pixies album I have. *makes mental note to get Surfer Rosa*

Doolittle is fantastic - probably my favourite Pixies album. It's been on my car stereo for over a month, now.

I would have a hard time making up my choice between QE2, Tubular Bells, Platinum (that is Oldfield, Oldfield and... Oldfield), but Händel's Music for the Royal Fireworks and Orcus' AOL 6.0 are strong competition.

Rat, who can't remember his way round this bloody thing. Posted Dec 9, 2001
can I chose a 14 hour long CD of all my favourite songs that I put together myself or does it have to be an off the shelves model?
If you could only have one CD....
Ommigosh Posted Dec 9, 2001
I think that they are talking about actual albums which you can buy in the shops here, otherwise everyone would just be listing loads of their favourite songs.
For me too it probably has to be Wish You Were Here by the Floyd. It still does something to me deep inside my soul every time I hear it.
However Ommadawn by Oldfield is happier and might be a better choice for staying sane in an existence almost bereft of music. Hergest Ridge, also by Oldfield, is better but a bit darker and gloomier.
Me, I'd stay at home with all my CDs and send just one away! (Probably JM Jarre's Equinoxe).
