About Me

Hello,

People call me Jonathan because it's my name. I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but moved to Newbury in Berkshire at age 4. I have been angry about this ever since, as I don't recall being consulted on the decision to move and, compared to Belfast, Newbury just doesn't measure up. Newbury isn't really a town at all; it is just a place. If Newbury were a piece of clothing, it would be a nice pair of sensible shoes. Newbury now has a bypass, removing any last vestige of a reason a person might have for going there.

So there I was, stuck in Newbury, knowing it would be at least 12 years before I could qualify for a driving license so as to be able to get to places infinitely more interesting. During these years I attended first Falkland County Primary School, then Park House Secondary and finally St. Bartholomew's Sixth Form. I was (and still am) absolute crap at sports, with one tutor describing me as "the reason they invented stopwatches with a date function".

I became interested in electronics and computers, and qualified with some science subjects. My first job was in the computer industry, leading naturally on to doing social work in the field of Learning Disabilities for around 15 years. After working briefly as a physiotherapy assistant I have now gone full-circle, and am currently with the NHS in an IT Support role. My career path has not been a straightforward one.

My wife, Julie, and I were married in 1992. Julie is that special someone who only comes along once in a lifetime. When I'm happy, she's happy, and when I'm sad she buys me chocolate. In 2002 we moved to Cornwall, taking on a traditional stone cottage "in need of some modernisation", which is going to remain our project for some years to come. We keep rabbits and have a non-descriminatory garden where flowers and weeds are equally welcome.

My interests are HiFi and music, electronics, astronomy and science generally. I am a licensed radio amateur. I also go camping and cycling, enjoy eating pizza, and have a photograph album full of pictures of onions.
