"Memento" is probably the most spectacularily different film there is - and I heartily recommend it to everyone.
Other recommendation: "The disappearance of Finbar" It may take some finding but it's a great fillum.

Run Lola Run, German and definately different. It goes all cartoony at one point and has weird Polaroid flash forward bits. I love it.
Isn't Amelie by the same guy who did City of Lost Children. If its the one I'm thinking of, I'm definately going to see it when it gets to my bit of Suburbia.

Raising Arizona (that biker in it reminds me of some of the types that used to frequent a pub in my town of origin...). Also "Hear my Song" - an Irish "fillum" about a tax-exile singer of the 50's.

There probablu are only about 7 different kind of plots. But every now and then a movie comes along that is different. Cube being one of them. But I think that many of the movies mentioned here are simply weird, not really different. Anyone can film a movie upside down and claim it is something new.
What about Stitch with Rutger Hauer. First half of the movie takes place in a plain white room with no furniture. Also Short Cuts and the other movies by that guy. And Magnolia.

Oooh, yes. Run Lola Run should definitely be in this list, me forgot it.
And yes again, Amelie is by the guy who made "City of the lost Children" and "Delicatessen" and the last Alien sequel (Alien - Resurrection). You can tell from the camera perspectives and some of the actors

Daring to be different here and naming a film that I personally wasn't sure whether I liked it or not but...
Memento is most certainly different to the norm.
It's though

I love
The Matrix
Blade Runner, obviously not the voice-over version
Staying Alive with Jason Fleming
The Wicca Man not that different, but I think it deserves a mention
Yes Zardos does have a certain strangeness about it!

Once Upon a Time in the West
I would say the best films of their genres.

"Leon" with Natalie portman and Jean Reno. Actually made me cry a bit.
Highlander, any film that has Sean Connery playing an Egyptian and Christopher Lambert playing a Scot has to be diffferent.
Is "Amelie" any good then? Rossy loved it on Film 2001 but those pretentious dicks on Newsnight didnt.

Ah, Once upon a time in the West, now there was a film. Jack Eyam`s fly catching trick with the gun barrel, the music,Fonda`s stare, for me,the best Western ever

I was going to mention Velvet Goldmine, but someone beat me to the punch! I highly recommend it to those with a good stash of psychotropic drugs. And an ability to forgo the need for a coherent plot.
Another strange one is Ravenous. It's about a band of cannibals holed up in the Sierras during the California Gold Rush. In addition to a bizarre plot, wacky characters, and over-the-top acting, it also has easily the strangest background music ever set to film. The touching happy bluegrass banjo cannibal chase scene music comes to mind first....

I saw Leon, what made it so different from other movies? And also 2001, it is considered a great scifi movie but is it anything fundamentally different?

This is what I was wondering yesterday, people just seem to be just putting forward their favourite films.

Mind you, lots of good films up there and going by movie standards of late then "good" is certainly not very normal in Hollywood films these days

Oh and if you really want to see something different watch:
Eraserhead - Director David Lynch
It's the strangest film I've ever seen and makes even his other films seem normal by comparison.
Don't know that many people who enjoy it though.

Eraserhead was off the chart! I saw it at the local Film Theatre with the girl I was with at the time, and she laughed all the way through it. I was just disturbed... still got it on video though In heaven, everything is fine...
How about
Baraka - to take you away from the horrors of the world.
Koyaanisqatsi - to bring you back with a bump.
Both are pictorial documentaries of the natural and human world respectively with no dialogue, but with soundtracks by Phillip Glass. I recommend them both for different reasons - beautiful and tragic in equal measure, but very real.

Amelie is great. A different film was the short 'Pikachu's Vacation', before Pokemon the Movie came on Until later......
