Existenz! Saw it a month ago and still haven't worked it out.
The most "Different" film ever must be Artemis 81 - I believe it has only been shown once, on new years eve 1981 (not sure is it was 01/01/81 or 01/01/82) and featured Sting.
The story seemed to have been writen by 6 drug induced writers then stiched together.
It was pure crap, and not worth stayng up for, but as it was the only night in the year I was allowed to stay up till midnight I watched it.

Existenz is pretty easy to follow, compared to Cronenberg's earlier film 'Videodrome'.
To Yatsuni's list I would possibly add Takeshi Kitano, and John Woo. Woo is a pretty straight-ahead action director, as can be seen from MI-2, and Face/Off, but I don't think that there's been an action film yet that beats either The Killer, or Hard Boiled. 'Beat' Takeshi's films are rather more European in style, in my opinion - they are very violent, but the violence is contrasted with a slow, contemplative style. Brother is very good (and available in your local Blockbusters ), as is Hana-bi.

If anyone's looking for wierd films.. Try anything directed by Peter Greenaway... The Baby of Macon, The Cook, the thief, his wife and her lover (or something like that) ....
They are all seriously weird films
Notice I didn't say good, just weird

I found Lethal Weapon II to be a little different from Lethal Weapon and the other sequels. Only a little different mind ...

Greenaway's films are usually pretty different from everything else, but not from each other. Though he certainly does use SFX differently to most other film makers
Common threads include the use of music rather than dialogue, text as a viusal image, games and divisions/chapters. I could go into other symbolic and mythological imagery but its far too late in the day.

American Beauty - Strange, funny, haunting. One of those films you spend the next week thinking about. Beautiful lighting and cinematography, too.
Twelve Short Films About Glenn Gould - the title says it all. Lots of great Bach.
Delicatessen - Very wierd. VERY funny.
M. Houlot's Holiday - more French humour (something they're much better at than a lot of people realise). Like other films by Jacques Tati (sure I've spelt that wrong), has no real plot, just a succession of amusing happenings. The only truly multi-lingual film I've ever seen, as well.

I saw Amelie this afternoon, and it was delightful. It's French with subtitles. I loved the young lead actress, I don't know her name, but critics are comparing her to Audrey Hepburn. Amelie was upbeat, fast-paced, and fun. It's too bad the little bit of nudity in it got it an R rating, because by and large it was very innocuous.
I think Koyaanisqatsi is an amazing film. It weaves a wonderful spell, and the music by Phillip Glass is mesmerizing.

sorry, i havent time to read the backlog so appologies if this has already been mnentioned. I though Meet Joe Black was a very different film. Not just because the script was probably about 5 pages long, but more because everybody spent ages staring at each other and never changed expression but it still made sense. I saw it on a video which had an almost worn out soundtrack and it didnt matter at all. wierd

Cheech and Chong - now THAT'S different.
It's also a total waste of time.

1) The Swimmer.
2) Walkabout.
3) Most of those horror films that you always took out from video shops in the early 80s when it was all new. Those horror films had a "feel" about them that would be impossible to replicate now.
