Hi Traveller,

thanks for your thoughts. smiley - ok I think nobody of the Curators wants to hide his/her identity, so posting under a Curator account, although this has been discussed, wasn't deemed necessary. To have double work by posting in two places is not too desirable, and so it's basically a) posting to the entry (the Author is informed automatically, but it could look cluttered and it's difficult to trace changes globally), or b) posting to the Curators' homepage, which has the advantage of having all changes documented in one place, but the Author doesn't necessarily see it. So what's better? Dunno. smiley - smiley

You do not have to hide your identity, or even announce every posting with the hat on, you are a Curator.

to be honest I think that the word volunteer in "Curators' Volunteer Group" is not the right word, because a "Curator" is asked to be "Curator".

I think that...
...they should be called "Curators of Edited Entries".
...there should be "Curated by:" on the Edited Entry's page.

both would make less secretive.

I don't think that's really called for: correcting a typo hardly warrants a credit, important work though it is!

pheloxi, you could refuse if you were asked, thus it's a volunteer scheme. smiley - biggrin

but you can not volenteer for it!...

it is question of how to define volentering....
for me is that some one asks openly for volenteers and any one can responce to it! in this case a selection of people is asked to be a curator! they have opertunity to say yes or no!

That's as maybe, but they still do the work voluntarily, therefore they are volunters.

As Jimster said earlier, most (all but one?) of the current Curators are Scouts or Subs who, when the possiblity of such a group was raised on the various mailing lists, volunteered for the position. I imagine (although this is, of course, down the the Editors) that, if the scheme proves a success and additional Curators are needed, this is how they will be recruited - there may be no general, H2G2-wide call for volunteers, but there will be a call for volunteers from the existing groups. As with all other schemes, final say on who is 'invited' will rest with the editors.

all other h2g2 volunteers are openly asked and not recruited.

do not get me wrong I do not want to be curator.

Pheloxi, here are some dictionary definitions.

volunteer:
a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service

voluntary:
proceeding from the will or from one's own choice or consent

So you can see that the Curators are indeed volunteers, although there was no general call for volunteers when the group was set up.

I certainly don't want to see a "Curated by" tag on entries, as every entry could potentially have one of these. I've already made changes to about a hundred entries since the scheme started. I hope to examine every one of the 7,000 entries in the Edited Guide. Do you really want to clutter up the screen with Curated by Gnomon on every entry? smiley - biggrin

I'm not sure that's strictly true, pheloxi... Anyone wanting to be a sub-editor, for example, posts to the Sub-Eds page. When new Subs are needed, the Editors go through the people who have volunteered, select those who are likely candidates and give them an editing test. Assuming they do OK on the test, those people are appointed as Subs. So, the Editors still 'recruit' subs - you can't become one without being recruited! When the Editors need new Curators, I imagine they will still ask for volunteers, it's just that they're likely to do it on the Subs and Scouts mailing lists rather than on an H2G2-wide basis.

you are right about the "curated by:"...it was just a thought!

I still think that there is difference between volenteering and recruiting.

Post articles aren't classed as Edited, so the Curators have no editing rights to change them. That's down to the Post team themselves, I'm afraid! smiley - thepost

I think TiT is referring to the special name ThePost which is supposed to point to the current issue of The Post. Again, this is something the curators can't do.
