Seems a shame that the poor little fish swim all that way and your immigration won't let them in the country.

On September 15, 2001 I recieved a phone call from a prior service recruiter with he United States Marine Corps. I was given the option to rejoin my unit now, or e called to active duty later and e placed in a "Combat Replacement" company. My old unit is a Light Armored Recon unit. I have decided that I will be going to my old unit. I do not know when my unit will be deployed, but I no doubt we will be.

Is Ryan Stiles Canadian? When he was on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (the British, pre-Drew Carrey version), he was always introduced as an American, from LA.
Let's not forget Saturday Night Live, produced by a Canadian (Lorne Michaels) and featuring lots of Canadians over the years (Mike Myers, Kevin Nealon, Tim MacDonald, etc.)
Colonel Sellers, who will be genuflecting to the north again when the hockey season starts next month (but will naturally take a break from genuflecting during the Olympics... go USA!)

broelan Posted Sep 16, 2001
actually at first i thought ryan was american, after clive introduced him once as 'the tallest thing in seattle'. but then someone else told me he was canadian, and currently living in the u.s. i could very well be wrong, it isn't unprecedented (just unusual )
any canadians that can clear this up for me?
Thank You, Canada

I really hope this doesn't start to require a huge amount of new manpower and drafted recuits and such. I decided long ago that if it was a choice between being enlisted and the draft, I'd enlist, but I'd still prefer not to have to make that choice.
Thank You, Canada

The reports that I am hearing indicate that recruiting offices are overwhelmed with people wanting to enlist. I am glad that people feel so strongly about this. Joining the service is not for everyone, if you (or anyone) do not feel comfortable putting on a uniform then don't, do something else to help us out. Send care packages, letters, etc. That will help more han you think.
Thank You, Canada

*A Canadian*
Thanks not necessary. But what's happened to Please?
When the United States closed its airspace and scrambled its fighters last Tuesday morning there were hundreds of International flights incoming across the Atlantic and Pacific. They were past their point of no return and could not recross the ocean.
But Uncle Sam declared any plane other than US militrary aircraft operating in US airspace would be shot down.
So it's not like we had a choice.
We continue to feed and clothe many thousands of these stranded passengers. Thousands have been taken in by Canadian families. Just here in Halifax, there are still several hundred of them staying at one 'temporary shelter' at a sports stadium waiting for 'arrangements' to be made.
Many refuse to fly again after their ordeal: circling over the cold Atlantic, waiting to run out of fuel, finally landing at airports jammed well beyond maximum safe capacities. Then they were told nothing and held prisoner on board their aircraft at the far end of the runways for hours and even days before being stripsearched, interrogated and de-loused. Don't even ask where their luggage is!
And all these big gas-guzzling jets can't be refueled or serviced at the small airports where they landed. A few get just enough to hop to a bigger international airport, leaving their passengers behind.
It's a logistical nightmare across the entire country. Our own airservices were completely grounded for three full days and normal domestic service will be disrupted for weeks trying to sort out this backlog.
Oh, ..there was this one guy on a plane diverted to Toronto, who was wearing a flight jacket and had a picture in the pocket of himself wearing said jacket, posed in front of the WTC. The Mounties are currently beating the living s888 out of him before they hand over what's left of him to American authourities.
And only if they ask politely. Thank You is easy, it's Please we'd like to hear occassionally. Of course, he might just be a guy with a flight jacket who had his picture taken in front of the WTC, not of itself a hanging offense. At least not in Canada.
peace

taliesin Posted Sep 17, 2001
I forgot to mention, we Canadians have a very keen sense of fashion.
Flight jackets are an offense to our National Aesthetics.
We also think people who carry photos of themselves, unless these are official photo id such as drivers licenses or passports, are much too vain, and therefore are not likely to be Canadians, but are probably infiltrators of some kind, attempting to pass themselves off as Canadian tourists or something of the sort.
Whatever, the motivation of carrying self-photos would be completely incomprehensible to us self-effacing Canadians, and we Canucks get real ugly when confused, which is most of the time.
Quite probably the unfortunate gentleman was an innocent US citizen, under the not unreasonable, although mistaken, impression that his photo would assure Canadian peasants that he was indeed just another rich Yank, so that they would put away their sharpened sticks and let him spend his money.
Too bad he ran afoul of our Fashion Police.
And most Canadians are aware that part of the bashful, blustering American character is an inherent inablity to say please. We don't really care all that much about formality, do we ~jwf~?
The very same Americans are not at all hesitant to say thank you, and I for one would much rather accept sincere gratitude, however offered, than the formality of mere politeness.
But then, I am just another simple, informal Canuck..
Peace
Thank You, Canada
Shea the Sarcastic Posted Sep 17, 2001
I had very little to do with the planes landing there, but I thought I could at least add my thanks on behalf of a grateful nation. I apologize for not being more polite about the entire situation in the first place. I'll say "please" next time.
Thank You, Canada

Update:
I am 'pleased' to announce that chap with the pictures and the nice jacket has just been handed over to US authourities who are 'eager' to question him further.
uh, thank you, thank you very much

No wonder the trout want to emigrate to New Zealand.
We don't have the flight problems here either. Most of our birds choose not to fly
