Thank You, Canada

Post 1

Capt. Phil

Thank you, Canada. In those first hours of absolute chaos, Canada accepted all international flights destined for the USA. Instantly and unflinchinly Canada took the risk of more hijacked flights diverted into Her airspace. As that terrible day progressed and Canada was visited with some 30,000 unexpected visitors, Her citizens extended every possible hospitality to our people. No nation has ever had such a neighbor, and you are our dearest friend. Should these present roles be reversed, we hope to prove ourselves worthy of such friendship. Thank you, Canada...

Thanks also from the UK to Canada for accepting with such hospitality all those Britons who were diverted to Canada. It's not just the US, but the UK as well who can count you as a great friend.

I agree. I thought at the time that Canada was taking a great risk accepting all those flights. How very, very brave. Thank you.

Good thought! Thank you Canada! You have been a great neighbor to the North. Thank you to all my Canadian friends who seem just as willing to offer support in any way they can.

That wonderful piece of propaganda was written in 1973. The give-away is the reference to obsolete aeroplanes - Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10 - I have seen it posted three times on h2g2. It was removed, presumably because of copyright issues, each time.

I guess it was originally written as a response to some of the flack America was getting at the time about the atrocities in Vietnam.

I did not know it had been published previously. I found it a good thing.

It almost made me cry when I heard it on the radio and then read it. I hope that most Canadians feel that way.

I guess I could write a new one entitled "Letter from New Zealand". At least it wouldn't be moderated.

The content may differ.... smiley - bigeyes

On second thoughts, perhaps it's not such a good idea. Especially if the first paragraph is anything to go by.

America: A Friend Across The Seas

"This New Zealander thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the people who, while benefiting most from the booming world economy of the last 40 years, have been willing to lend money - at reasonable interest rates - to other countries. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who made billions of dollars in profit by selling and supplying goods and services needed to rebuild the infrastructure of these war-ravaged countries. Some of this money is still owing."

Mountie, that outdated (1973) propaganda has been posted here four times that I know of. It has been removed by the moderators each time because of copyright issues.

That's why I started writing a Thank you from New Zealand version (see above)

Let's see, how long does moderation usually take.. counting ... and one hippopotamus, two hippopotamus, three hippopotamus.... smiley - winkeye

Well, the friendly relations between Canada and the US go back a looong way, well, long for us infant countries, anyway.

Canadians, of whom I am sorta almost self-effacingly, well, proud is not normally what Canadians are, except in beer adverts, to be one of.. smiley - erm

And while we often engage in petty quarreling over fish and trees and stuff, we are actually quite good friends.

Did you know Superman was a Canadian invention?

And the telephone?

And the robot arm for the space shuttle?

And that a Canadian was the head of the OSS, which was the super-secret intelligence agency for the Allies in WW2?

You probably didn't, because most people think of Canadians as lumberjacks -- as in the Monty Python skit.

You know: 'He's a lumberjack and he's ok...'

Or they think we are ice fishermen

Or Mounties, ( sorry, The Mountie )

But we are really mostly harmless

Mostly

Oh, yeah, about the Gordon Sinclair thing. It is a little out of date, I admit, but then, most of us dumb Canadians are a little out of date, too. But the sentiment is still there, and we still think of Americans as our friends, mainly because both of us usually dislike our own governments, so we have always had someone close at hand with whom to commiserate.smiley - winkeye

Peace

Thank You, Canada

Did you know Canada is taking NZ to the World trade Organisation's appeal court because we refuse to let Canadian trout into our country?

Bullies smiley - biggrin
