If you have broken your handset by hitting it with a large hammer, just wait on the line. Eventually someone will notice that you're not pressing any buttons, will put you on hold to speak to a customer service consultant and will make you listen to mind-numbingly dull music for a couple of hours.

I was booking tickets to go and see the WWE live at the manchester pay-per-view in October - and all i had solid for an hour was:
"We are sorry, the network you are calling is busy - please call again later. You have not been charged for this call"
those infuriatingly perfect and rounded vowels were just drumming over and over and over...you hang up, hit re-dial and come back in to the same message where you'd left it moments earlier.
"sorry"..."calling is busy"..."again later"....you have not been charged for this call."
I never did get through on the phone in the end.
God bless the internet, I say.
