Left or right, then? Alternatively, there's that tunnel that starts from that thar hole in the floor...

*Peers down into the gloomy tunnel in the floor.*
Brr.. there's cold air coming up from that. Spooky...

Behind? I don't think it is. Look! Isn't that the same tunnel? Either we're going around in circles, or the tunnel is following us.
Perhaps it doesn't like being left behind? Perhaps it's hungry and wants to eat something?

Look, there are lots of footprints in the mud. Someone's gone up this tunnel ahead of us. It might be the Kvarts!
*Nervously takes the safety catch off her gun.*

It's always been there as far as I'm aware.
Perhaps a better question is: 'When did you start using it Mari?'

*In reaction to the , a great sound is heard of scraping and rustling. An odor of filthy wet garbage gets stronger as the kvarts attack them suddenly from all sides. They emerge from the walls of the tunnel, from the ceiling and up out of the mud of the floor. They are dripping, looming shapes. Bullets pass through them as they are more spirit than substance. They heave and tear long crooked fingers like sharpened twigs and thorns at the BFG's faces.*

We have a well-established process and procedure for orderly phased withdrawal in the event of unexpected under-resourcing.
It's called ... "Follow me!"
