I had lunch with the Executive Producer of the movie today, and he's very confident that the movie is now on track again. Everyone involved seems to be happy with the work Karey Kirkpatrick is doing on the script.
And as for casting, nothing will happen on that score until the script gets greenlit. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. It sounds like they'd rather avoid casting a big name in one of the parts (Zaphod, for example) as that would overbalance the movie towards that character, when you want more of an ensemble movie. It sounds hopeful - that they'll actually get good actors rather than expensive stars.

That's great news. I read Salmon of Doubt in the Summer and DNA mentions the film a few times. I half wish there couldn't be a movie anymore because without DNA they'll probably get it completely wrong

From what I hear, they're not way off base yet. After all, they're working from a draft of the script which Douglas wrote and was happy with - it's not like they're starting from scratch or anything. And there's a noble history of each different version of the story contradicting the earlier versions to some extent, which means the movie just becomes one more slightly apocryphal telling.
I'm hopeful.

Well, I have to admit that it might be good. They have to have the original voices for the Guide. Otherwise it wouldn't be THHGTG.

True, let's hope the script only has voices Book sequences which can be lifted from either the TV or radio!
And I really want Stephen Moore to play Marvin again!

Does anyone know a possible date (spring/summer 2004, for example) for the movie? Also, any news on the studio that'll produce it?

Disney, I think (correct me if I'm horribly wrong!).
I'd guess we're going to have to wait a good few years - look how long it's taken to get this far...

It's being produced by Spyglass films, and will be distributed by Buena Vista (the Disney Corp's distribution company) but it is definitely *not* a Disney production.
A new draft of the script is under development currently, and if that meets with general approval, the process will go forward. 2004 is likely to be the earliest you should expect to see it, even assuming it happens at all - until shooting actually starts, don't assume it will definitely happen. There's still plenty of time for a studio executive to go 'I don't get it' and the project will stall again.
Keep your fingers crossed.

I'll join that petition!!!
But I like the idea of mark wing-davey as Zaphod. Is the original Arthur still around? Susan Sheridan, perhaps?

I finally figured out a place for Jim Carey in the movie. The disembodied caretaker. As far as Patrick Stewart, mabye he could be one of the many great executives at the H2G2 main building

Or Mr Stewart could be a Vogon. hmm.... you know, Jim Broadbent would make a good Arthur Dent. How about Lenny Henry as Ford Prefect?

Just a thought...
How about Rhys Ifans for Ford? He has a weird accent and unconventional looks. Don't worry, it took a while to grow on me too!
