Plans for the H2G2 Movie
Sol Posted Jan 11, 2002
Much as I love the digital watch joke, I suspect that one'll be out in favour of something about mobile phones.
And whilst I watched in amusement as in the 80s it appeared that a shoe event horizon was imminant, now it seems to be travel agents.
Not sure I agree that the humour is essentially British, but most of the jokes are poking fun at the British and, well, just wouldn't be as funny if they were supposed to be about somewhere else. But then as Mr Adams had been living in the USA for a while I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had injected a more international flavour to the script. Then again, maybe not. Who knows, as you say TM
And then I thought that since (arguably) the story is from Arthur's point of veiw and (and I'm reaching a bit here) it is possible that the accent thing is all the result of the babel fish filtering all the accents to something A would expect to hear, then either one could make a case for all the accents being similar to A's, or all the 'alien' accents being non british (alein) in some way. Or, just for fun, all the accents being dubbed to the accent of the region the movie was playing in, the babel fish working for us at this point. Or all the voices being dubbed by the actor who plays Arthur, or... I'm getting anal about this, aren't I?

I read an article in a Swedish newspaper the other day, and it said that Jim Carrey should not play Arthur or Ford in the H2G2 movie, but Zaphod.

Well, I alsways imagined Zaphod as having a North Am accent. And *whispers very quietly* I can't think of any reason, specifically, why he shouldn't play Zaphod... *runs like hell*

fords - number 1 all over heaven Posted Jan 11, 2002
I maintain that this is a British 'thing', much as they got mostly British actors in LOTR because, when you think about it, could you see Gandalf with an American accent? Or Frodo? I think not. You could get away with Zaphod being played by an American actor, but the rest have to be British. And could you really have an American play, say, Arthur Dent?
By the way, how come the Americans always nick our place names?

They nicj the place names from Europe cause they're descendants from Europe, and they lack imagination.
I think Jim Carrey could pull playing Zaphod off..

Actually, the idea is starting to grow on me, I am admittedly reluctant to say...!

Yup, despite my previous remarks re. all-British cast, I can see how Jim Carrey could pull it off playing Zaphod. He'd have to tone down the manic qualities, although he has proved that he can do it if required (The Truman Show). Good point well made, whoever brought it up first.

And we all know that the *only* good actors in the world are British and American, so lets just leave the rest of the world out of it!
All new H2G2 cast
Arthur Dent - Kevin Harrington
Ford Prefect - Eric Bana
Trillian - Claudia Carvan
Zaphod Beeblebrox - Austin Tayshus
Marvin - Oh, I can't remember the blokes name, but he'd be great!
Eddie the Computer - Tony Robinson
The Golgafrincham Captain - Russell Crowe
Slartibartfast - Sam Neill
Frankie Mouse - Mel Gibson
Benjy Mouse - Bryan Brown
The Vogon Captain - Frank Thring (Damn, I think he's dead)
Hotblack Desiato - Frank Thring (That's better)
Fenchurch - Nicole Kidman
Eccentrica Gallumbits - Portia DeRossi (This part probably won't appear in a Disney movie)
Wonko The Sane - Rove McManus
Gargravarr - Guy Pearce
Prak - Michael Caton
Zem - Cate Blanchett
The Krikkit Robots - The Australian Rugby Union Team
Shooty & Bang-bang - Rampaging Roy Slaven & H.G. Nelson (If you didn't get to see them, you missed the best bits of the 2000 Sydney Olympics)

"Jim Carrey...? DA would spin in his grave."
In actual fact Douglas was thinking of Jim Carrey as a possible Zaphod while the movie as in development. Not Arthur, though - that would be stupid. Hugh Laurie is Arthur, obviously.

I heard a radio report that Carrey is set to play Zaphod and Hugh Grant will be Arthur. However, i reckon Carrey might make a good Ford...
Apart from this, my main preference is that Lemmy from Motorhead plays Hotblack.

How about Meatloaf?

TowelMaster Posted Jan 14, 2002
Well, Meatloaf is not really metal is it? I saw him live about a year ago and he basically played rock 'n roll, just like in the 'Paradise-by-the-dashboardlight-years'... Besides, IMHO he's just not 'seedy' enough... You would want someone that your mother would forbid you to date...so Ozzie comes to mind Or one of those guys from Slipknot... *grin*

I'm not really a metalhead so you'll have to forgive me.....
There are some artists I'd LIKE to see trying to spend a year dead for tax reasons..... Steps, Geri Halliwell, virtually every boy band ever.....

Indeed, indeed... But : just a year???
And I ain't no metalhead mahself either, I guess we'll have to ask Bassman...
