I hope you don't mean explanations of thunder, rain, fog etc in terms of the divine excretions.

You accord it too much dignity to call it a 'theory' I think, SG. It can hardly claim to be much more than a tentative hypothesis at present.

Oh, it is much less, I assure you. I would go so far as to say it's a lot of words put together to form a sentance.

What intelligence! What wit! Oh, I might just explode with the profundity of the truth that has thus been expounded! Lo, my mortal heart cannot take such wisdom, for it is truly manna to my soul! smiley - biggrin

Dan is at home with Rachael, I would presume. Oh, and I don't theorise - I hypothesise. smiley - tongueout Are you one of his friends? I'm guessing you are from your home page.

Oh, and be careful - this is a discussion forum, not a flame-war! Check out the thread you were at earlier - 'Insult Contest'! smiley - smiley

Kirpster

Going back to earlier post - what I should have said was that I believe it to be true, as when my psych teacher told us, she had been told it was true by her source.

Then again, what is truth? Surely it can be somebodies truth, but not everybodies. The sun may be made of gas - taken as truth. However, early greeks believed it to be a fire drawn by a horse driven by a God. That was their truth.

Hmm... (kirp sinks into great trance, trying to find the meaning of truth. This will probably be to no avail, but still, I will try...)

I know how you feel about reincarnation - it satisfies as sense of justice in a way that nothing else can. Also, it is not a crutch for me either, although at one point, I did something of that attitude, inasmuch as I so wanted things to be different, I really wanted another smiley - earth life...
I have a memory of asking my father what reincarnation was, back when I was about 7 or 8. I think...smiley - magic

Nice predicative calculus. smiley - smiley

Scrymidden: No, that would be discreet maths. We commonly practice it in top-secret lecture theatres. (I'm not very good at keeping a secret.) Often, it involves illegal operations being carried out by computer scientists with poorly-defined variables and muscles, and sometimes we integrate each other by parts for relief. When we're feeling particular horny we might expand our braces and rub ourselves up with K(y), before solving linear simultaneous equations all over our smooth, hard tensors. I've had group algebra with anything up to 20 people during one of these sessions. Yep, us mathematicians /really/ know how to get it 'down and dirty'... smiley - winkeye

Are you saying, Jordan, that you consider that we *might* all be solipsists? (As individuals, or as a planet.)Now we get to another interesting question. Is there an objective reality 'out there'? I assert that there is, that we each occupy a portion of it, and we overlap with other peoples's. That sometimes it's tempting to crawl into our own navels, after examining them too closely. NB - I do *not* mean you by that remark, Jordan, I mean myself. I have a tendency to be too self absorbed.
We're here to, among other things, interact with each other, so that one or another's eremitic tendencies must be stomped!smiley - biggrin

It's quite possible. I hold that there's a physical universe 'out there' that we occupy, but I also don't see how people can do much more than that. The universe that they /live/ in is entirely within their minds. It's only /shaped/ by external reality.

What do we mean by 'universe' here, anyway? smiley - huh

I think it's only hetero/homo/bisexuals that want to 'crawl into someone's navel,' to be honest! smiley - winkeye Though I know precisely what you mean. There's just a bit of residual innuendo running around in my Uni(verse). Oi! Universe! Give it a rest! smiley - grr

I shall go home now, I think! smiley - sleepy
