i'm not too worried about laundry, i do my own alot of the time and other stuff, the hardest thing will just not having my parents there to support me...

Not having your parents around is the biggest step towards growing up. My family was a bit less than ideal(felt more like I was raised by wolves). At 18 I left home and had to learn how to do a lot of things for myself. Fortunately, my older brothers were around...and both of them can cook, launder, iron and balance a checkbook.

Start clipping those grocery coupons... and shop around a bit now so you know where to find things for the best price when you need it. Things like notebooks are cheaper during the back to school sales, but, clothing that is on clearance now is what you would need in the Fall(flannel sheets, blankets).
One of my brothers lives in New York now. He doesn't like shopping there because unlike here, there is no Wal Mart. So, whatever he buys for the apartment is usually mail order. A second back pack just for shopping and running errands might be worth the investment.

That's good
My brothers are a bit older than me (13 years and 8 years). For a few years we rented a house near the local university. They taught Maverick a few tricks and he taught them a few things too.

Well I have fits of enthusiasm for gardening, especially since reading the "Food for Free" book which tells me, for instance, that the new green tops of those nettles over there *points* will be delicious in a spring vegetable soup!

...they have to be very new and green and fresh when you pick 'em...taste a bit like spinach when cooked! My sister is more adventurous than I am at picking and cooking wild plants and herbs, but I'm getting more confident. It's easier to tell with things like blackberries and rosehips what's good to eat, but I still shy away from harvesting wild mushrooms as I'd rather be safe than sorry!

True, very true... in Italy the autumn before last, after a journey into the hills around Genoa on a delightful dinky little train, we got back to a cloudburst (the heavens opened, just like a small monsoon) so dashed into the station cafe for an industrial-strength and shelter...
A man who I'd seen earlier on the train getting on at one of the hill-top stops appeared with a basket full of the most incredible mushrooms, golden brown to palest yellow, arranged artistically with bright green chestnut leaves! The other people in the cafe were either local, so were used to him showing up with this bounty from the high forests, or British like us...
I gathered he was taking these wonders to one of the expensive restaurants in town, but I couldn't help admiring them in my fractured Italian (much to the annoyance of the other Brit family who clearly thought I was being too loud and effusive!).
Anyway we ended up with a map of the region spread over two tables and a great conversation in Engtalian (or Itlish) about where exactly to find the best mushrooms...When he went he bowed and presented one of the pretties as a t for our dinner!
