I was gobsmacked this afternoon to hear the last verdict of the day. I am expecting the National Guard to come down the street tomorrow morning and herd us all into school auditoria, where we will be forced to count ballots.
Then, when the count swings over to Gore, the Republican-dominated legislature of the Sunshine State will pick their own set of electors, who will be told to vote for Dubya. The Supreme Court will emerge from the Halls of Justice, all of them blindfolded and brandishing poles, trying to hit one of two pinatas suspended in a tree in front of the white house. One pinata will be Gore, the other Bush; each one will be stuffed full of chads. The first pinata to get hit and broken will represent the man chosen by the Judiciary branch to occupy the White House. Then Congress will stick its finger in.
What does anybody think will happen after that?

*Lil's face appears in the monitor in the library, shadowed. Behind her is a vast hall filled with all sorts of people of all ages, some in jeans and tshirts, some in suits, bikinis, bathrobes, you name it. Everyone looks bewildered and resentful. Armed soldiers patrol the aisles*
*whispering*
What did I tell you?
Can't stay long, but I wanted to show you what we're dealing with.
*holds up a ballot covered with inky fingerprints and arrows*
I'm in the seance department. We're calling in the spirits on the really ambiguous ballots! The independent judiciary is in charge of the ones where voter intent can be seen manually, forgive the expression. But Madame Blavatsky and the Great Houdini are on duty on The Other Side to help with the rest.
See you later! *moves off-screen leaving a full view of soldiers passing out fistfuls of ballots to the general population slumped at school desks*

Good morning to all!
Exactly my thought, Lil. I almost don't care who wins. I received a forward recently which has been making the rounds in the anthropology department that recast this whole dilemma as happening in a third-world nation--wouldn't we be upset at the "abuse" of democracy?
Odra, sorry about the college apps. They are a bitch. Are you applying to college or grad school?
*Kathy hauls in laptop, field notebook, etc. and works on ethnography, after showering (VR) and sticking her head under the faucet because there isn't enough hot water for a shower (RL)*

The 96% of the world's population who don't live in the land of the almighty dollar, oops land of the free, have had their "Only In America" prejudices confirmed by the election shambles.
Try comparing America's mess with the recent Canadian election - ballot announced, election run and elected people in place, all in less than three months. That's what most fair and reasonable people would call true democracy.
God bless America and its (mainly) 18th century constitution - it needs all the help it can get.
Only my opinion. Please don't shoot me - even though, no doubt, you have the constitutional right to do so.

We just found out that the Republican party's lawyers' application to the Federal Supreme Court, to stop the manual recount, has passed 5-4. There will be a hearing to decide about manual recounts on Monday. The Florida members of the Electoral College are supposed to be selected on Tuesday, and odds are now that we really will have two slates... one based on the vote and one hand-picked by the Republican Florida legislature. Like the writer said in the latest New Yorker, this attempt to suppress the recount is beyond contemptible....

I think you had better come home and have a cup of tea, Lil. It's the only sensible thing to do in the circumstances. It gets us Brits through no end of constitutional crises.

CC: college apps, not grad school, yet. Financial aid's a pain to apply for, though. All manner of tax forms and God knows what.

*perking up* I think I'll have a cuba libre and, I don't know, are you tired of salsa yet?
Garrison Keillor really ripped into the mess in Florida on Prairie Home Companion tonight. "Some people in Florida were really surprised," he sez, "When they used their ATM card to pay for groceries and discovered they had voted for Governor Bush..."
I simply cannot wait to see what Brill's Content magazine will have to say -- it was enough of a surprise to read such scathing comments in The New Yorker, which is not really yer political organ.
ma basta...
I got your horse descriptions, and will be thinking about some illustrations to go with them. They sound super for intermediate-level riders -- Benny and Shamrock are breaking in well as trail horses. Let me know when you decide to go over to the stables and we'll do some dressage work. We have another enthusiast who really wants to join and board some horses, but her computer crashed a couple of weeks ago and she hasn't got it running again yet.

AOL's been crashing like crazy on me, so l can certainly sympathize with computer woes...a Cuba Libre sounds marvelous for me as well...
Mm, lime.
Tired of salsa? never...
Glad you like them. l popped into the stables and am currently wandering about. l hope to get in to do some riding between exams this week.

Good morning Professor? Everything dry at home? D'you have more space than you did in your old digs?
I found out that Mike A's little brother has passed all his 11+ exams and next year Plymouth is going to have both Atkin brothers in the same school.
Ah, thanks Matina. Fresh cinnamon bun, Professor?
