That was a cool bunch of photos, Titania.... I've been to Monument Valley, and aside from the odd formations, it's a very boring patch of land.

Um, GT, just so you know...the comment you made about me getting my facts straight? HUGELY insulting. Really.
And historical facts aren't facts. Just clarifying that. It's the best conjecture we can make based on the evidence provided.
Seriously. Don't go faffing about with such claims. It's insulting to me as a historian. I *WRITE* the books you read about history, sir, and I don't appreciate the flip tone.
AT ALL.

Good Doctor Zomnker (This must be Tuesday," said GDZ to himself, sinking low over his Dr. Pepper, "I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.") Posted Sep 4, 2009
The GDZ family is firmly ensconsed in Moab. We have a jeep expedition tomorrow and rafting on Saturday. Should be fun.

Oh, fudge! That means I'll be on tinderhooks about my bennies until then...and I was planning on moving "home" the week of Oct 1!

Couldn't see you in the crowd at the game hyp . I thought Pujols was going to do it twice for the Cardinals but it just didn't happen . Sounded like a good atmosphere when he was batting with all the bases loaded

GT - I'm afraid I'm with Montana Redhead on this one. You've made several contradictory remarks about history and historical facts so far, all of them apparantly in attempt to 'correct' the statements of extremely knowledgeable and well-read members of the Salon, and now you make a joke to the actual professional historian with a doctorate about keeping HER facts straight? I do wonder if you are not taking the trouble to remember who the various people you are 'joking' with actually are and do. I find 'jokes' work best when made to appropriate people about appropriate subjects, and patronising jokes to professionals who clearly know their stuff, about the very subject that they've devoted their life to, err, never work.
Apologies to the rest of the Salon for not politely stepping round the issue but ploughing in in my size sevens instead.

Mornin All
There's a strange, bright yellow thing in amongst the usual clouds this morning. Bet it doesn't last.

You know, WA, the first thing that came to mind was a Vogon Destructor Fleet. *Then* I thought of the sun.
We've got it too! And a darn sight less wind than yesterday, so I can actually cycle to work. Hurrah.
GT - just think before you post, would you? It would save a lot of hassle for all concerned. Thanks.

Morning everyone. Don't be selfish with that bright yellow thing, WA. Share it around.
*Sips thoughtfully*
*Decides MR and Ag have already said what she's been thinking*
*Dunks biscuit in tea*
*Watches in irritation as half the biscuit dissolves*
It might be worth mentioning here that for reasons lost in the swirling backlog of time (but, if I remember right, involving a bar of soap) we refer to the planet Mercury as 'Freddie'. Our hostess, Lil, kindly warns us whenever this messenger of the gods goes retrograde because communications and other interactions tend to go one step backwards, two steps forwards in time with his dance.
*Looks at biscuit bleah at the bottom of the cup and decides to leave it there*

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Sep 4, 2009
>>Wold springs from Olde Engish Wald...=forested.....goes back to Old Norse......Weald.>>
Eh... found it hard to believe that the specific combination of the letters 'wea' would be of Norse origin, just doesn't look right.
So I googled for it, and found a site I didn't know about but that might come in handy in the future:
http://en.wiktionary.org
Anyway, Weald seems to be another Old English expression, and would be Wald in Old High German (as it still is in modern German) and Völlr in Old Norse. Völlr? Hmmm... the closest thing in modern Swedish that I can think of would be Väld, but when I tried to google for it, I only found the word as misspellings of Våld (violence) or Värld (world). Hmhph!
Semi-cloudy and windy in Stockholm this morning.
Enjoy your weekend GDZ, sounds like fun!

I didn't quite see that as Norse either, Ti. German much more likely.
Could anyone jump start my brain today? And a little of the yellow thingy wouldn't hurt, either...

kelli - ran 2 miles a day for 2012, aiming for the same for 2013 Posted Sep 4, 2009
Morning all
*Agrees that MR and AG have said something that has been on the tip of my tongue*
Last night I slept for TEN HOURS! Without being woken once. Night before last was so awful and I was so tired that my mum offered to step in and take the boys off my hands for a night or two. Last evening she persuaded t'Other to drink from a bottle for the first time in 8 months which means I don't have to rush over this morning to feed him. Yippeeeee! I feel like th millstone round my neck has ben removed - that might sound awful in relation to my baby, but the milstone isn't my child (I'm missing them both!) it is the fact that me, and only me, has been able to feed him in all this time so I haven't had a break. And now I can! Am going to book a spa weekend today, after I have finished cleaning the house from top to bottom while the kids are out.

God, typo city and awful grammar in the middle there, sorry. I blame the fact that most of my keyboard keys were prised off by t'Boy and none seem to fit correctly now. I can't blame him for the grammar though, that was all me (or I)

That's real progress Kelli - well done to you and your support team
I'm going to blame Freddie for my technology diffs then. New camcorder won't seem to let me load clips into Windows Movie Maker, but wants me to use its own software. I LIKE WMM. I know how to use it. I don't want to have to learn my way round another program.
Am I just getting old?

Oh, (last post I promise) and remember the soldier I mentioned the other week? This is a story about him:
http://www.salisburyjournal.co.uk/news/4577377.Bomb_blast_soldier_vows_to_continue_to_serve/
The family wanted to get his story out because they think that the news is reporting deaths from Afghanistan but ignoring the large numbers of injured men and women that are coming home.

That's interesting Titania.
The weald /wold discussion reminded me of the most ridiculous line of doggerel from a 26 line verse:
"Yield, yield, ye youths! ye yeomen, yield your yell!".
I assume that you can work out the theme of the other 25 lines.
