Kelli, I am so pleased you got some sleep at long last - can your Ma take the boys on a regular basis? And a spa day sounds delightful.

And I meant to ask - what was the eventual news of the husband of your friend from the other forum?

Ben, that is him in the link in post 259. He is recovering remarkably well, and starts physio soon to help him sit up so he can start to adjust to his new life.

Teuchter, my mum is worth her weight in gold. SHe made me laugh though, complaining that she had an easier night than I had led her to believe as she was "only" up at 11, 12, 1, 4, 5 then up for the day at 6.30 smiley - silly

Ben, poor family indeed. They had planned to have four kids but this isn't going to be possible due to his injuries - such a lot for them to adjust to now that their future is not going to be what they had expected - they are very positive though. And like they say, for every one soldier reported dead there are three injured like Gavin.

That made me cry Teuchter. I used to live in Bassett. It's a good place.

But "Highway of Heros" forsooth! Good for the mayor.

Sounds like you might have started the road to recovery Kelli a nights sleep can do wonders for restoring sanity.

I've taken the day off today, so I can sleep in and do not very much. Having spent most of the summer rushing about trying to make sure everything is sorted for the start of the new academic year I now feel I can have a very brief break. The term is almost here and I've spent the last three days getting a computer lab sorted each day. Time to just stop and not have to rush for a while.

Our "Highway of Heroes" is the length of the TransCanada Highway from here (Trenton) to Toronto (where all fatalities first must go). It took a lot of arm-twisting by a few politicians, but when you see the thousands of common folks that line the road, the over-passes ... You can see that it was a good thing to do.

It's right in the right place, Revisited 50, and what you describe is both powerful and moving. The name "Highway of Heros" suits New World habits of speech and frames of mind.

I was moved to tears by the simple and unassuming sincerity of the trubutes described in the article. Renaming Bassett High Street would be neither simple nor unassuming, no matter how sincere it was. Really, I guess, I am querying why someone would think it a good idea to ignore Bassett's 1300+ year history and play copy-cat for somewhere several thousand miles away.

I guess we are back to the history / geography / people / language discussion of last night.

Ben

Teuchter,

I've just read the obituary of Stanley Robertson, the last of the Scotland's Traveller storytellers. I can't link it because it's in this week's Economist and it's under subcription.

Very interesting and based on Aberdeen's fish processing houses. He was awarded a Masters from Aberdeen Uni for keeping the old story telling traditions alive. Worth investing in a copy for the local interest.

Nothing like weald in old high German. Seems it's always been wald in German.

I found something interesting when googling for 'wold', though:

* Main Entry: wold
* Pronunciation: \ˈwōld\
* Function: noun
* Etymology: Middle English wald, wold, from Old English weald, wald forest; akin to Old High German wald forest, Old Norse vǫllr field
* Date: before 12th century

1 : a usually upland area of open country
2 capitalized : a hilly or rolling region —used in names of various English geographic areas

Kelli, that's brilliant. Paying off a sleep overdraft is surprisingly quick. I've left you a message on your PS too.

It was indeed the Lincolnshire Wolds I looked at and I did in the end find one location I was prepared to live in. Luckily the relocation never happened. So I'm here at the centre point of the UK at 150m above sea level feeling reasonably safe. I should never have re-read The Kraaken Wakes smiley - erm

Hurrah for a good night's sleep!

MR, I would be similarly irritated if someone were to correct me on information science issues (well, unless it was Hyp or Ag...) or the eighteenth century novel. And my qualifications are paltry compared to yours!
