Oh, Bernie Goetz. That takes me back. I remember a large segment of the American population applauded his actions a la "We're fed up* too!"

*Fed up with muggings, yoof, urban decay, the sorry state of public transportation in the 80s and--unfortunately--blacks.

So...what's the...um...penalty for LTTF these days?
smiley - huh
I hope it's not still those ghastly brilliant blue 'Dr Suess' mohair pants that ride up into ones nether regions causing discomfort and generate no end to itching. Not that I've ~ever~ had any experience wandering around wearing them like the albatross they are...I've only 'heard' about them. Yeah... Yeah! That's it! Someone ~else~ was sporting them and you could just SEE what an inconvenience the attire was for the individual. Not even his trenchcoat and leather satchel were enough to hide those attrocious blue pants. Not even his Peril Sensitive Sunglasses could disguise the shame and embarrassment he felt for being such a 'slacker' in showing up to the Atelier forum.

[B4 lets his shoulders sag a bit and puts on his best 'hang dog' look, shuffles his feet in nervous agitation, and looks askance at Lil while he asks:]
So... Lil. Can I get a Backlog Un-Read Pass? Please?

As for minismiley - mouse and Pedros_Ecosse... Good to make your acquaintance. I believe I've seen mcm here a number of times, but P_E...well, we haven't been formally introduced. No doubt due to my lengthy absinthe...er...abeyance...um...abnor--NO!...huff...my time away from the forum.

Got high-speed internet at our new (intermediate) home. We're having a house built. Bought the property. Living about five doors down from where we'll break ground. Gives us the opportunity to pester the contractor regularly while the project's in full swing. Still waiting for the first shovel of dirt to come out, so--in the meantime--we enjoy the benefits of renting a neat new condo from our contractor.

Displaying a weapon in hopes that it is going to be a deterrent is a bad policy. All of the fairly extensive training I have had, and will continue to have, states that if you pull your weapon plan on using it. Don't believe that you can just use it as a deterrent. Displaying the weapon can be seen as an escalation of a situation. I hope never to have to take atvantage of the training that I get, but if I do I hope that my actions are second nature, but not instinctive. If I had to pull a trigger, it will be a conscious decision.

I will always defer to Marv on issues of gun safety. My only point was that if you've pulled the gun, and the attacker drops her/his weapon and runs off, and you shoot anyway, you've *probably* lost the self-defense argument. I do believe self-defense normally has to do with *perceived* threat rather than actual threat. My usual disclaimer applies. In many states (including mine), self-defense becomes much easier to prove if the attacker is in your home/ on your property. These are called "castle laws."

Marv's point does lead me to another though: one of the reasons I don't own a gun is that I don't believe I could pull the trigger, even if my life were in danger.

Other Arizonans feel differently, though. Our Governor, Jan Brewer, just addressed the annual National Rifle Association conference, and stated that she might be in favor of dropping the laws that currently forbid the carrying of a firearm at an establishment that serves alcohol. The headline read "Brewer: Why Not Have Guns in Bars?" I can think of several reasons.

Marv, how do you feel about the amendment that Sen. Coburn just attached to the Credit Card Consumer Protection Bill? The amendment would allow visitors to carry concealed weapons -- and semi-automatic ones -- in National Parks.
