I'm all for the more personal approach, too -- as long as I can find what I'm looking for when I want it.

I like the latter better, as well.
And where are we posting recipes, because I just made a *killer* low carb soup!!! I'm eating it right now and my tummy is very, very happy.

I've got a few quick and easy recipes I can share, if anyone wants them!

I'd definitely vote for the casual informal one of those...
I've got at least two recipes I can throw in - the pumpkin bread recipe and the pozole. I expect my recipe for pumpkin bread will be almost exactly the same as Hypatia's, but that's okay - we'll compare and contrast and maybe even mind-meld the two together. I've also got this recipe for court bouillion which is just fantastic...
And I love the cooking primer idea. I can think of several things right off the bat that would be useful:
• Cooking times for potatoes - sweet, yams, and regular. Microwave and oven - which would include useful tips on poking them with a fork, etc.
• Cooking times for meats - how long to cook your fish, how long for the steak on each side in the pan, etc.
• Rice - simple instructions on the proportion of water to rice
• How to poach eggs!
• How to make roux and other thickeners

I got the roux covered, Lentilla. I've been practicing, actually. My soup tonight used a roux made with soy flour...a bit peanuty, really, but good in the soup.

I remember you volunteering for that on the other thread - will you be throwing in any gumbo recipes as well?
Soy flour roux sounds interesting. As long as there's enough starch to toast, I figure you can use any flour you want.
Hmm... there's a delicious peanut soup that a soy flour roux would work really well in. I've seen the recipe - it's your basic bean soup, but made with peanuts instead. Then they're blended to make a smooth texture. It's got garlic and chicken broth in it, too... Guess I should go look it up online and try it out!

I'd go for the informal one too.
I'd offer to do a primer, but hen that would be guarenteed to make everyone's cooking forevermore a disaster...

Sorry, what I wanted to say was: I'm happy to contribute, but I'm not a great cook. I cook edible, but not fantastic food, I mean. I was wondering if there is room for people to add refinements to each other's recipes, along the lines of 'I bet I know what would make that fantastic...'.
Or is that already the idea?

I agree with the less formal approach too, it reflects the Atelier and we are far more flexible and liberal than a traditional approach.
However stuff still has to be easier to locate, with links perhaps at the bottom of each recipe to methods and basics.

MR, we do need a place to start posting recipes and primer information. Do we want it here on h2g2 or offsite?
Do we want a category for Low-Carb recipes?
Lentilla, I like your primer suggestions. We can list the primer categories in the index with the recipes. And each item in the index can have the link next to it, instead of just a printed location. And we can cross-index to make things easier to find. So, 'FG's Famous Macaroni and Cheese' can be listed in the Fs (actual name) and Ms (generic name).

I can supply the chocolate cake for 30 recipe, a lentil soup one, and how about a section on store cupboard basics? what Salonistas CANNOT be without.

Heh. I was just talking about mac & cheese in a forum on another website.
It's the crack cocaine of the casserole world.

Oooh god news, though I find califlower cheese to be more addictive, during my vegan phases I start dreaming of the stuff.

Vegan....I keep considering going vegan....or at least vegetarian....

Can we set up an identity that is the cookbook, and have a user page just for the cookbook, with people who contribute leaving things as discussions, and then making them guide entries? Or is that just too much work?
And how would we do it if it was offsite? We would need someone with some bandwidth, etc., right? (Oh, I am such a luddite).
And YES to the low carb section!!!

Lentilla (Keeper of Non-Sequiturs) Posted Dec 2, 2004
I think that would be a good idea - just start a cookbook page, then start each discussion with the proposed chapter title. Eventually we'll get all the recipes together, then we can perhaps put them into a guide entry of some sort.

I think we're all ready to start putting our recipes in, so I'm going to go ahead and create a page...

If that's not cool, we can do something somewhere else - no skin off my back. (ouch!)
