Strangely - Depending on the church you may find yourself under more compulsion to join the coffee rota than take communion.

I'm here. Survived Christmas with Her Crankiness. I'm off work the rest of the week, but I have a grant application to finish up and e-mail off tomorrow. I can do that from home. I'm doing nothing at all for the rest of the day except read and be lazy.
Good summing up, Lil. I'm always amazed at how much ground we cover in the course of a conversation.

For the record, my shoulder ended up being badly bruised (probably from paintball) but not damaged unduely.

I think for some churches, coffee and pastries are the communion. Those little tooth-filling crackers they give you are just to give your tongue something to do while you sit through the prayers.

Speaking of coffee and pastries, on my final day of Christmas vacation I went out to breakfast this morning: a mocha and a pain du chocolat at my favorite bakery in town. Yummy!

Every notice how much a hot shower helps when you're sick? I feel about a million times better!

*Rushes in, hair like a bird's nest, pursued by a vicious little to-do list waving an alarm-clock*
Hello hello hello, can't stay long, we're going to see the Extended Family, I'm technically packing, I keep finding presents I'd forgotten to wrap, for some reason there's a saucepan full of saffron custard in the fridge - how in heck does one pack custard? - there are holes in both my best sweaters, I've cricked my neck and can't turn my head properly, I was up until one am last night knitting my niece's Christmas pixie hat and now I can't find a tapestry needle to sew the back seam on it, I can't decide what books to pack, S is making sniffy noises about size of suitcase and that therefore the 's' on the end of 'books' is unwarranted... Oh, Matina, is that gigantic latte with cinnamon for me? How kind and thoughtful of you.
*Admires the scribing*
My mother always finds the best cure for foot-ball head is to wash your hair over the side of the bath - the combination of hanging the head down for a while and lots of hot water seems to loosen the ooginess quite nicely. A shower is probably more dignified and comfortable, though.
*Manages to pin the to-do list to the sofa with a cushion, and then sits on it to drink her latte*

I'm planning a quiet day - well, as quiet as one can be in a houseful of ManFlu.
We had a peaceful Christmas, except for the hacking coughs emanating from both males, and enjoyed turkey, kedgeree, scrabble, champagne, chablis, Pass the Bomb, and more turkey.
We never did get around to eating the Christmas Pudding.
Seasonal Greetings to all

Hi all! Back from the in-laws, laden down with pressies and free food (mmmm.... Christmas cake).
Lots of housework to do as we did our traditional leave-the-house-in-a-whirlwind-of-destruction on Christmas Eve as things were turned upside down and inside out to make sure we hadn't forgotten anything.
And to answer Lil's question from Post 1, yes there are English Civil War re-enactors, the largest group being the Sealed Knot (who have turned into the bane of the re-enactment community as all re-enactors, no matter what period they do, get asked "are you the Sealed Knot?").

Piece of string walks into a bar. Barman says "Oi, we don't serve string in 'ere, didn't I bar you last week?"
and the string goes
"I'm a frayed knot"

Just tested it on 11 who, in all fairness, was somewhat distracted by his new Heroes of Might and Magic V Very Extremely Lots of CDs In-Fact-All-of-Them Collection™.
He groaned too
