I always fixed sweet potatoes with ham. And corn muffins. I haven't baked a ham since F died. It was a great favorite of his, but I don't particularly like it. Since there will just be Mother and I this Christmas, I plan to roast a duck with a cranberry/wild rice stuffing.

Affi, don't forget to add an ornament to the goo spruce Christmas tree. It can be regional to where you come from, or something particularly dear to you.
Which reminds me. I'm adding this little parrot ornament. *hangs a slightly tacky, Asian-looking parrot high on the tree* I got it at a flea market in Birmingham (England), 25 years ago now. See, it's covered with little tiny bits of mirror so it sparkles. I always give it pride of place on my tree because it reminds me of that whole part of my life.
This is my Friday. I'm taking a 3-day weekend, then going back to work on Sunday and Monday, then having Christmas Day to lounge around, not bother getting dressed, disconnecting the phone...
Anyone else giving themselves a free pass for Xmas Day?

Oh, and I'll get to working on a new thread when I can. We don't have a scribe. I am packing lots of errands and a Christmas dinner into my 3 days off. Maybe I should start the new thread on Christmas Day.

Sounds diabolically clever, Lil.
You need some down time. I'm relieved you're taking a bit of time off.

Down time is good. Looks like I'll be taking next week off completely.

I can't take any time off. I have a huge project that is supposed to go live on the first of the year. Someone up there hates me....

David, you are absolutely right, what I should have said is artists who don't usually record Christmas music. I recorded the Sugar Babes today a younger band who as far as I am aware don't record whole CDs of Christmas music in the way someone like Cliff Richard does.
I just had another panic halfhour as my DVD recorder jamed and despite unplugging 20 times to reset wouldn't. For 2 Christmas I have been without a DVD recorder as had 2 breakdowns over the Christmas period, so understandably I went to cashpoint to draw out money to buy a new one tomorrow while the other was repaired. Purely by luck I had a timer recording set which unjammed it and it is OK, phew!
.
Hype, I was thinking of a hot recipe for red cabbage and apple as I have had it before and found they go together surprisingly well and quite a good thing with turkey. So thank you for recipies.. A simple thing I have found quite good at Christmas is a baked onion, I think but am not certain, that you can even leave the skins on and simply put in oven for a fairly long time.

FG, the thank you was a general thank you for all as there was your recipe and suggestions for braising, etc.

My problem with my DVD recorder are not a million miles from whoever mentioned storing discs all over the place for their university thing. The problem with the hard drive packing up on my DVD recorder would be hours and hours of recordings being lost, so since I have had breakdowns before I was recording hard drive information onto DVD discs t be on safe side and would get another machine to play them on. Since this very nearly happened, storing discs of university stuff all over the place sounds very sensible!

*Hangs an odd looking ornament, one that resembles a map of Finland with an X on it (carved out of a piece of jade), onto the goo spruce tree*
I won this as part of a treasure trove a few years back. Outside the cave, a Snow Wight lay in wait within a particularly large snow bank. And inside the cave, 'twas my recurring seasonal nemesis Carol the Ancient Yuletide Troll. I don't know how she got in without alerting the Snow Wight, but she wanted the treasure trove too. Although I think she mainly wanted that ornament map. I've not gone searching for the X yet, though. Busy year.

In typical fashion, our wonderful weather - and it is really nice right now - will end as soon as my holiday starts. I will have to clean up my yard in the cold, it seems. Rats.

I'm starting to wonder in D and I will live thru Xmas. Well, let me rephrase that...I'm starting to wonder if her sullen yet oddly panicked pre-teen, hormonal self will live thru Xmas....
