MR, sumac is the primary ingredient of za'atar. Unless you're saying you like your sumac *neat*.

Bill Murray it was, in Stockholm, even:

Sumac straight or in zaatar...in chicken or tuna salad.

Hypatia Posted Oct 11, 2007
I will definitely try that, MR. Bet it would be good in egg salad and deviled eggs.

A ghost of a thought flutters down from above, a sleepy half mumbled dream, a faint sense of obligation, a scatty virtual holographic calling card, fizzing and popping in poorly coded sleep induced madness:
~wilma~ Sumac on fried eggs... sumac on melting butter on rice... ~wilma~

Instead of counting sheep, everyone, Wilma's counting sumac!

I have to confess i had to look up sumac to see what it was . Made from dried sour berries eh , sounds interesting . Some of the recipies containing sumac certainly look good . Baramundi and humas sounds like something I would like to try , although probably not with baramundi .
Best fishes......tod

The sumac we have around here is poisonous. It has to be two different plants.

Yes, I was wondering about that myself. Sumac??

Same plant species, but different genetics, apparently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumac#Taxonomy
The kind I'm talking about looks like this: http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/sumac.html
And yep, sumac in deviled eggs is *way* better than paprika. Hmm, I have some eggs...

Doris Lessing got the Noble prize in literature this year *sighs and adds yet another name to a very long list of 'books to read'* You know, there's not a chance I'll ever make it to the end of this list - a lifetime isn't enough!

Agapanthus Posted Oct 12, 2007
Morning all.
*Sticks head in spice drawer at home and rummages for some minutes*
Nope, no za'atar. A deficiency I must clearly remedy as soon as possible.
I have a friend coming to stay for the weekend, I have to go to work in a couple of hours' time, I was SUPPOSED to be spending the morning studying, but, oopsie, chez Agapanthus is in usual state of explosion aftermath in back room of Oxfam shop.
Damn and blast.
My first piece of course-work is due next Friday. Did I mention I had a friend staying for the weekend? I feel a depressing series of late-nighters coming on.

No it isn't poisonous, it's the Rhus coriaria sumac variety.
Ag, you're a hop, skip and a jump away. We seem to frequent the same large sanitised place with shops and stuff. Want some moonshine?
From the sublime to the ridiculous here, I am afraid. In the next fortnight, our goes on a four day school trip which has been a real drama to organise, my friend arrives, leaves arrives again and leaves again within a 5 day period, my mother arrives and wants me to take her to Paris - it is half term adn I have just been informed that we have a VAT inspection...
I'll just go hide over here under the ottoman I think

Well, it turns out my knees don't have anything too serious wrong with them... inflamed ligaments or something. Basically I've just got to keep a stock of ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory handy and put cold stuff on them if convenient.

Good news Mr D. My legs seem to be starting to work again after three weeks of B12 injections.
