I guess it just had to wait for the italics to get in this morning to approve it.

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Jul 2, 2007
The zebra/horse picture - it was published by one of Sweden's leading 'serious' newspaper which I have full faith in. The picture was used to illustrate a whole article about it, including an interview with a professor in... in... 'functionsgenomik'
The foal's name is Eclyse and belongs to the Hollywood- and Safaripark in Stukenbrock, Germany. The professor's theory was that daddy horse must have been a... a... tobiano/overo(?) (or cow-coloured, as my nephew put it recently). This might explain why the different fields of colouring are so cleary defined.
Wohooo for Mika Brzezinski! She's even on YouTube now:

About Strangely's temporarily moderated posting - I think it might have alerted the h2g2 automatic profanity filter rather than having been yikesed by a researcher.

I had a good laugh watching Mika B. If only other newscasters would do the same, I'd like to think this will be a better world: peace would break out everywhere, the dodo would return from extinction, and George Clooney would show up on my doorstep asking for my hand in marriage.

You'll have to wait for Mission Accomplished Day next year, FG.
I'm just fine. From my description of the "wildie" that bit me, consensus is that it was a gopher. Of course any animal could be a disease vector, but gophers don't hang out as close to homes and such as do rats and mice. My champeen hunter cat also brings home baby rabbits (of which there have been a bumper crop this year). Or she did before the catdoor curfew went into effect.
Glad to have you back, Strangely.
Now I know I have to launch a new conversation today, but first I have to pop the cover on my other computer and give it a vacuuming. I think something inside related to my video card is overheating, and it's bound to be dust that's causing the problem. I hate this job. Where are all the techies I used to live among?

And now I have to sober up after inhaling alcohol fumes. The heat sink on the CPU, under the fan, was totally clogged with dust, and many qtips were sacrificed to the cause. But now the interior of the machine is clean enough to eat out of, although that would probably be counter-productive...

Since Lady C hasn't checked in here yet, I'll report that she made it home yesterday without any problems. They missed the flooding by driving south to Tulsa and then turning north. They normally can make the trip in 3 and a half hours. This route takes 6 hours, but it was the only one open to them. NE Oklahoma is flooding today, so they timed it perfectly.
A gopher? That makes a better story than a rat. Anyone can be bitten by a rat. But a gopher!
Welcome back, Strangely.

Hypatia Posted Jul 2, 2007
It's getting worse, folks. There is an oil spill caused by the flooding in Kansas. 42,000 gallons of crude are in the Verdigris River heading for Grand Lake, which is in NE Oklahoma.

I'm glad Lady C got home safe. I'm not in the least glad about the oil spill. How horrible.

> Occasionally see big beasty camel spiders
Is it true they're the size of hubcaps? I mean big hubcaps, not the moon caps for VW Bugs. I've seen some pictures... they looked like king crabs.
> Do you suppose that was staged? The Mika Brzezinski thing?
I don't think so, only because Joe Scarborough gave her such a hard time - and insisted the footage be run anyway.
> And believe it or not I put a tea towel on and it just went very very quiet and didn't move.
So what did you do, Z? Did you put it outside? Or invite it to tea...
Welcome back, Strangely!

Z Posted Jul 2, 2007
Er, put it outside.. obviously. Then it flew off. I'd had a really sh**ty day at work so I was mildly statisfyed that I'd saved one life that day.

for Z. When I have a sh**ty day, the journals don't get shelved. I feel a little out-classed now .
Is it me or is Joe Scarborough a prize bottom-head?

Thanks for your concern for our safety. We had a bit of a detour going to the wilds of Missouri, but nothing like the one coming home.
We had a marvelous time and Hyp fed us well--as usual.
Spiders the size of hubcaps???

Hypatia Posted Jul 2, 2007
Well, it may not be crude in the river.....it may be disel. And it is going toward Oolagah Lake, not Grand Lake. Oolagah Lake is a water supplier for the city of Tulsa.

This is about 30 miles from me.

I am not reading any of the comments about spiders.
Am in the middle of cleaning house for my book club meeting tonight. The only time I ever clean is if someone is coming. Besides Lady C. I let her see it dirty.

Then you definitely shouldn't look at this link. It's creeping me out, that's for sure.

Rain, rain, go away....
The skies opened a few moments ago and the world went all tropical monsoon on us for exactly 4 minutes. The weather is most certainly very disconcerting at present. I do hope all salonistas are well, and dry, and safe.
Lil, I got bitten by a African rabid dog as a teen. With no access to meds at the time, the local solution was to 'open the wound' (yes, it is a horrific as it sounds) and pour hydrogen peroxide till it stopped fizzing. Now, many will say it didn't work but it certainly wasn't fatal. I also avoided lockjaw despite skewering my foot with a 9 inch nail. Funny that we had all the vax for every infectious disease you could imagine (and then some) but the 'important' ones were not available...
I am currently battling my ToDo list so please forgive the intermittent visits. I do think of you all, and often.
8DXth Conversation at Lil's
Wilma Neanderthal Posted Jul 2, 2007
Oh, and the local solution for the foot kebab was the same. Open wound, insert hydrogen peroxide. Repeat until fizziness subsides. That worked too. Good stuff that hydrogen peroxide.
