I've lookit it up. 'To grave' is an archaic verb. It means 'to bury'. An alternative spelling of gravlax is gravadlax so I suppose its literal translation is graved-lox or buried-salmon.

The meaning of the verb is similar in Swedish - it seems there was a way of preparing fish that involved burying it into the ground very long ago - haven't heard about it in modern times

What is the linguistic root?
I can't smell anything cooking, shall we send out for bacon butties?
Watching Eddie Izzard last night on his Mongrel Nation series (it was the last one) it has been fascinating seeing how much we have learnt from having had an Empire, shampoo is a Hindi word for massage and as a nation we were pretty smelly until the Indian custom of cleanliness and daily washing caught on.
I have just downloaded Tube London Pro from PalmGear and I'm rather impressed. The only complaint I have is that you can't add any notes to it. So I shall hold on to CitySync London from Lonely Planet for a little longer, although it isn't nearly as pretty, you can add notes. Although H knows the Penderal Oak well from his visits to a large multinational opposite where he designed their wan, I shall add it just because I can

It was a series? Oh damn! I saw last week's episode, and thought that was it. How many were there, Caerwynn?
Bacon butties sound good to me ... bacon and egg butties might be even better? Mmmm...

3 or 4, I think P-C, but Eddie was so entertaining it's bound to be reshown on one of the terrestial channels or whatever the big 4 are called these days. I hope so, because we missed a couple.

*Pushes large microwave cart through the Salon and into the library. Returns and appears with a refrigerator/freezer strapped to a dolly.*
Librarians will always find a way to have breakfast. At library meetings we have breakfast, mid-morning snacks, lunch straight-up at noon, mid-afternoon snacks, late-afternoon snacks, dinner, and then after-dinner snacks.
What I have may not be as good as what the farmer's wife will cook, but there's plenty of it and you're welcome.

So Matina's gone off with Ampton? Oh dear.
*looks down at her empty tea mug, then heads over to Hypatia's trolley*
Maybe we can organise a sortie through the linen closet? Except who knows how long that would take?
Wait! I'll send a bot over to Joanna's Donut Stall. What sorts of donuts do we want?

Chinese restaurant names? "Hot Wok" and "Wok and Roll" - Now, this may be completely wrong, but I am sure I was told that Jade Palace was slang for a woman's private parts. Or maybe it was Jade Garden. Damn! Would I rather be a palace or a garden? A garden, I think. ("I'd rather be a hammer than a nail... etc")
Quite a good morning. I am temping at the local library, and I have been reading a book about UML in the longeurs.
The cats go to the vet's this evening for a once-over before they Go To The Vet's, next week. Poor darlin's. The PL is trenchantly opposed to neutering animals, (well male animals anyway ), so it is convenient that I can do it while he is out of radio contact. The subject need never arise.
I bought a fridge magnet online yesterday for the PL, "I think, therefore I'm dangerous", which will appeal to his ego in lots of ways, and a sticker for me: "Don't believe everything you think"; which is pleasingly oxymoronic and a vary valid warning to boot.

If there are any lemon s, Lil, I'll have one please.
Having bought yet another book of bread recipes, I haven't attempted any that need hand shaping and a second proving as I don't have anywhere warm enough. Has anyone tried proving dough in a microwave on a low/defrost setting? If not, then I may be forced to experiment which usually leads to a lot of ing and the menfolk for shelter
Cassie is due for her flea jab, I suppose Ihad better get it over and done with so tha tshe has forgotten about it and forgiven me before her vaccinations are due

The Farmer's Wife Posted Jun 19, 2003
*the butler's hatch cover slides up*
*the farmer's wife lays out some large platters. On one is scrambled eggs and scrapple. On another are some pre-buttered slices of toast*
I suppose you were all expecting to get fed whenever you strolled in, hm?
*plonks down and old-fashioned percolator of coffee and a pitcher of orange juice*
Oh, yes, I was told to cater for vegetarians. Vegetarians! *out comes a large steaming bowl of oatmeal*
There you go. Breakfast is served! *she holds up a triangle and bangs on it loudly*

I don't know how to spell what I want... they're those fried doughnuts you get in New Orleans... Sounds like Ben-yays, but it's spelled french...
*samples some oatmeal in the meantime. Isn't vegetarian, but sometimes eats like it.*

I took the gender test and this is what it had to say about me:
"People like you, who walk the scary line between man and woman, are *very* helpful in understanding exactly what it means to be human. Thanks, and good luck."
The two local chinese places are Mika's and Chinese City. The next nearest are the China Buffet and the China Wok and Wok it to Me (i'm not kidding)

If you're not going to eat your breakfast, don't expect any durn lunch.
*relents slightly* Time zones, is it? I'll do something in-between tomorrow.
*slams down the cover to the butler's hatch*

Irv, great idea. I'll take some beignets (http://www.yatcom.com/neworl/dining/cdm.html) for those who don't know what one is.
MR - there's a place in downtown disney called Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen that serves suppurb beignets.

Beignets. I know them from around here as zeppoli, but zeppoli are round.
Chinese restaurants: the closest to my home is Panda House, the next after that and much better was Y.Y. Doodles but that's the one that just closed down. There is a Szechuan Express near the train station but I have a bad reaction to the food there (headaches, joint aches, etc.)
I am male, however I seem to have picked the wrong bedroom color.
And the illustrious USAToday has this to say this morning:
"Scientists have decoded the male Y chromosome, solving mysteries about how the chromosome works and why men exist."
It fails to fill us in on why we exist however.

*jumps back form the hatch as it is slammed down*
Not nearly as friendly as the Farmer's Wives I've met either, although the last one seemed to think it was a great treat to watch piglets being castrated .
But she was French and the beignets we had there were round.
