MR - I did not see the kenai river, however I agree that the colors in Alaska can't be described. There were rivers that had glacier flow going into fresh water which was in turn going into the ocean, and the sharp color barriers were unbelievable. I have 6 hours of digital tape to review and fire wire along with about 250 "fine" digital images and 5 rolls of film. Hopefully I was able to capture some of the majesty.
We did get two postcard quality pictures of the glacier, now I understand why my brother (a professional photographer) calls Ansel Adams a hack (with a definite smile). He's always telling me that if you put anyone in the midst of such natural beauty and let them take enough pictures, they will produce masterpieces too.

{[caer csd] it was brill wasn't Lizzy? Actually we have rarely bought videos or dvds of films we haven't seen already at the flicks. Perhaps we had better branch out more.
I had gone shopping with the intention of buying some novels, but distracted by the Farmers' Market which is held once a month in our High Street. It was a wonderful sight, fresh produce beautifully presented and next time I shall definitely buy something! And I still don't have a book to read.}

It seems Amazon will not ship my copy of LoTR until next week - they must have a huge backorder. Which means I'll see if I can find a copy at a local store and then cancel my order with amazon. I wonder how many other people are going to do the same thing?
I suppose I should schedule a trip to Alaska before it all melts.

d'E -
Actually, while many of the glaciers are receeding in the world, Alaska's glaciers are still growing.
I would definitely recommend a trip to Alaska for anyone. Also, I think I will try and do a trip to the Scandenavian countries ..... strictly for equity of course

From today's newspaper (I tend to go for the small articles rather than the big news):
The new Archbishop of Canterbury has been inducted as a druid in a centuries-old Celtic ceremony - hmmmm... odd thing for an archbishop to do...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/wales/2172918.stm
The life of Thor Heyerdahl <./>A767180</.> will become a film - Norwegian producers currently searching for sponsors
...and the sun is shining - I wouldn't mind another 4 weeks of vacation, completely lacking motivation for my w*rk right now...

I think you only have to worry about the Archbishop if he starts running around stone circles naked and hanging out with Billy Connelly. And anyway, when they say "Centuries old" they mean two centuries. The society was only set ut two hundred years ago and I'll bet they made up a lot of it as how much of the ceremonies is going to survive a thousand years of being stomped on by the Church?

My mother tells me that the new Archbish is very eccumenical. I must say, he seems to have the drop on Mum. So far she hasn't managed to combine druidism with the other 33 (christian) faiths she embraces.

Finally saw FotR last night... good movie.
*hides under couch in case people want to kill her*
why is it that i never manage to see the movie other people think are fantastic? sheesh.
and why on earth can i only write at 3am?
and why are my neighbors silent all day and loud at 3am?
why? why? WHY?!!?!?!?!!
(note: none of the above questions need to be answered unless you're feeling particularly philosophical, as they are asked in the spirit of asking slightly whiny rhetorical questions in an attempt to make oneself feel better )

And here where I am it's another beautifull, warm day!
We went out on a boat trip yesterday, to some of the outer islands outside Bergen. It's great to have friends that can borrow big, fast boats from dad.. Sunshine, a light breeze, and 22C in the water made the conditions perfect for a swim, and the water was crystal clear. After barbequing we sat and watched the rich life in the shallows, tiny
and beach-crabs and seethrough shrimps, quite fascinating!
On the way home we stopped to do some fishing. We caught about 10 kg (around 20 pounds)of sei (coalfish) in one half hour!
I was up till three o'clock cleaning and filléting fish...
We bought the LotR DVD, even if we know that in three months time, the "directors cut" comes out.. We'll just have to buy that one too..
Courtesy, if you stop by Bergen on your scandinavia-trip, I hope you find the time to come and say hello.

Hello all, just back from a week-long vacation with a close friend and a new husband in tow.
Looking at that, allow me to clarify. I'm not burdened with the new husband, she is.

Courtesy,
Ansel Adams *is* a hack. But one who found the greatest place to be a hack.
I know from experience that if you have the item to photograph, and throw enough film at i; that you will have a great picture.
My all-time favourite picture that I took, was a still life of three wine glasses. It took something along the lines of six rolls of film to capture exactly what I was after with that piece. I guess it turned out all right, as it won an award at an art show.
