Emar, the Flying Misfit... Yes, seriously, he's back... Posted Dec 2, 2000
I know I'm entering the discussion really late (and this is the umpteenth time I've used my lame "broken internet connection" excuse, but it still applies), but I'd like to say something about the gender-difference discussion here...
While UH's comment about the "rape advantage" may have been a bit blunt, it is interesting to point out that many anthropologists think that in primitive tribes, before humans understood reproduction, WOMEN played the role of cheiftains. The men still did the fighting and killing and such while the women stayed at camp and cooked, but in political matters, the male physical strength was useless. Why? Because as far as these people knew, the women bore children of their own accord. I don't mean women chose when to have sex, I mean that no-one knew that sex had anything to do with babies. Thus the mighty testosterone-crazed galoots were held in check by the fear of the entire tribe's extinction.

[His voice softens up, his eyes stop glowing, and his skin and hair become red and brown, respectively, instead of blue and black; he is now ... somewhat familiar] Well, speaking out of charictar ... [ahem]
I heard that men figured out the connection between sex and babies watching sheep. That's right, sheep. They noted that a more or less EXACT amount of time passed between sheep going at it and the females involved releasing lambs, and then said, "All right, I'm in charge now, and this is mine, this is mine, this" [flush] "is mine, this is mine, oh, and YOU'RE mine, too." The flushing noise you just heard was the status of women going down the drain.
...
It was in "The Illustrated History of the Universe."

Yeah, that was where I got it, too (though I've heard the theory reinforced, elsewhere, albeit without the detail about the sheep).
BUT NEVER ADMIT THAT YOUR SOURCE IS ANYTHING WITH THE WORD "CARTOON" IN IT! YOU'VE DISCREDITED US BOTH!

you mean "The Cartoon History of the Universe". I have a feeling it should be required reading for all American students...

dang simu-posts...
though this I must admit is a weird coincidence with h2g2 members:
we all read Douglas Adams, watch Monty Python, and now this...

Adams and Monty P. aren't such a coincidence. To even find this place, you usually have to know something about the HitchHiker series. And the Monty Python is explained by
A: The large numbers of Brits on this community.
B: The fact that all of us, British or not, are the wide audience of intellectuals and insomniacs that the shows were targeted at. That's why we spend all our time online.

[lafinas] I don't know about you guys, but i don't spend much free time on this.... that is what class is for , but ZEB is right... the humor in both the HitchHiker and Monty Python series are targeted to a select audience. Very few people understand either's commedy. You should see the looks i get when i make an allusion to either in everyday conversation.
"She turned me into a newt!"
"A newt??"

Even in Real Life all my friends quote Python. Many of them can quote Hitchhikers, but of course Python has the advantage of being in movies and television that is actually acessible in the states.
By the way, how did this forum turn into a serious discussion of sexual politics?
