Jelly is clear, made with strained juice. Jam is opaque and contains pulp. Preserves contain whole fruit. All are tasty on warm buttered toast.

Jam, very, very good on crumpets.
TOPIC DRIFT IMMINENT!
William Gibson got it wrong. In Virtual Light he claimed that the daughter of the owner of a muchos grandos Japanese company was in London eating crumpets with clotted cream. The cream would go rancid. Clotted cream and strawberry jam are spread on scones.

here it's a wrench, there it's a spanner
here it's a truck, there it's a lorry
but, a w**ker is a w**ker, bubba (mate)

Aubergine = eggplant
Courgette = zucchini
minced beef = ground beef
Not that I'm completely fixated on food, but just some differences in ingredients in one of my cookbooks.

Currency.
We have notes, you have bills.
Denominations:
5 pound note, or fiver
10 " ", tenner
20, just know as a twenty
50, not seen very often as they are shunned. Far to big (money-wise, not size!) to be carried around.
Coins are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2.
Liam.

Going back to the subject of the thread - phrases.
A couple of Irish favourites:
f**k me sideways
or... f**k my pink.
Both used as expressions of astonishment
Liam.

*decides to chime in with her own comment*
Several years ago I had a boyfriend who was, well.. cute but a bit daft... I used to call him a w**ker.
Years later we ran across each other (so to speak) and he asked what that cute pet name was that I always called him... so I told him...

Going back to Anoraks....
This word can also be used towards a "Sad Git" who is totally obsessed with a particular topic and can spout the most boring miniscule items of information that you didn't want to know.
For example
A train spotter or plane spotter is nearly always an anorak.
I suppose it's a bit like a "Nerd" but I always associate a "Nerd" with technical skills.

Pavement has a different meaning. In the US it is a street or road. In the UK it is a sidewalk for pedestrians.
Strange American expressions -
Have a hissy fit (temper tantrum)
Hump it home (hurry home)
Browned off (angry)
Blow chunks (vomit)
Snakebite medicine (bad whiskey)
Kegger (beer party)
Iceberg slim (pimp)

And...what are 'trainers'? Gwennie's always talking about them.
Here it means someone who traines you to lift weights, etc.. So,
I jusss figured she was gettin' lucky alot.
Beacuse of hootoo I know what 'having a dummy spit' is!
Baically a hissy-fit. hahahaha...good one!
As for my 'ruby' team-it's the result of the dog knocking a glass
of peach juice all over my key pad. I think I oughtta' rush out & get myself a whole new computer.
