US Cilantro = UK Coriander?

Is that why I can't find coriander in the store? smiley - tongueout

What the Americans call Cilantro is what we call fresh coriander - its the leafy plant. We also call seeds coriander, as do the Americans.

I think that's the right way round.....

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Not having the time right now to go through the backlog, and since we're on a culinary theme - US Canola oil = UK Rapeseed oil

There's nowt wrong with the name Richard.

It should also be pointed out that "John" is a slang term in the US.

Mycroft, when did you last hear someone refer to a "sleeping policeman". Mind you, as Jasper Carrott has pointed out, there was something very satisfying about driving over a sleeping policeman, with which "speed hump" cannot compete. Speaking of the boys in blue, here's a few UK terms for them (printable ones only):

Bobby (after Robert Peel, who started them; in the early days they were also called "peelers")
Copper
Pig (I think those two are used in the US as well)
The filth (collectively)
Bizzie (Scouse term)
Polis
Slop (backslang)

yes, john is a slang term in the us, and it has two different meanings as a slang term. a john can either be a bathroom, (port-a-potty is called johnny-on-the-spot), but a john can also be a prostitute's client.

unidentified persons are also commonly referred to as 'john doe's

My most embarassing moment was realising that a group of drinkers were actually Canadian and not American. So obviously I was duty bound to charge them the real price for all the drinks they'd been downing that night.
