Garter belt! There are also those wonderful new thigh-high stockings that stay up themselves! smiley - smiley

And men's briefs are also called tighty-whities ...

UK suspenders = US garter

Thanks Shea, I couldn't be a*sed to go back through the thread to get the trans for myselfsmiley - smiley

BTW

UK garter = The grandest and most noble honour that the British Monarch can bestow upon a citizen.

There are only 24 Knights Companion of the Order of the Garter at any one time. And then you Americans go and use garters just to stop your tights falling downsmiley - smiley

Well the citizens of the US have an historical lack of respect for the British Monarchy's ideas ... smiley - winkeye

And have you noticed that this thread continually returns to the subject of underwear and bottoms?

Yes, there are a lot of "bottom" references here, so moving it upwards as it were...

US dental hygienist = UK uh...?

Moving the thread away from underwear and bottoms? Hell no, we won't go. Hell no, we won't go Which reminds me...

T J: Mr. Shea

In the US we have dentists, too. A dental hygienist is more like a dental assistant. They do some simple procedures but they can't do all the work a full dentist can do. smiley - biggrin

This is a response to a post from some time ago,
wondering what Americans would call suspenders.
Well, I think we yanks would call them suspenders.
The only synonym I know of is "braces," but nobody
seems to call them that. Besides, "braces" are
found in the mouths of children (installed by the
orthodontist at great expense smiley - smiley ), and are used to
straighten their teeth. It would be quite an accom-
plishment for a single device to straighten your teeth
AND hold your pants up, but that would be like asking
for egg in your beer (which I've never seen anyone try
to do. I've heard of putting beer in soup with cheese
and hotdogs--wonder what UK readers would call them--
but I'll stop talking about food so you won't get
too hungry smiley - smiley ).

In Britain a soup consisting of beer, cheese and hotdogs is referred to as vomit smiley - hangover

But British suspenders don't hold trousers (pants) up, they hold stockings up. Unless you work in the City, when you might wear sock suspenders, but they're just silly. The things you call suspenders we call braces, and the things you call braces we call... braces.

My comments about "dental hygenists" was all about the difference in US and UK teeth. ie comparing your shiny white evenly spaced gnashers with our brown and worn down diseased stumpssmiley - yuk

My local dentist practice in small town south east England employs a dental hygienist. She has a very different role to the dental nurse, she's the one that cleans your teeth, tells you how to clean your teeth and then charges a fortune for the priviledge of teaching you how to use a toothbrush. Another American idea that I fear should never have been imported.

Oh yeah, I got sent to the hygienist twice. Then I decided not to eat sweets on the way to the dentist's and it didn't happen again.

Sweets should always be eaten on the way home from the dentist, everyone knows that smiley - winkeye
