I can't imagine how horrible a migraine is, and feel terribly for anyone who gets them...

smiley - hugs to the migraine afflicted!

I had one about once every two months
throughout the 1960s. At that time, the
only treatment was Cafergot, which was
part caffeine and part ergotamine. The
ergotamine (which comes from a fungus)
is the source for lysergic acid, which
is a component of LSD. smiley - tongueout

Frankly, I think Cafergot was potentially
dangerous, but they didn't know it then.
It's good that they don't need to use it
anymore.

Did you ever have any bad reactions to it?

I was prescribed Vioxx, which is a medicine for Arthritis, but they found a side effect was that it was quit effective in reducing migraine pain. It takes about an hour to kick in, and it isn't always effective. This time it took a long time, but it gradually diminished. Just left me exhausted.

I'm fairly lucky that my migraines don't last too long ... the longest one I had lasted 12 hours, but usually they'll just last a few hours. And I don't get nausea from them. And the lovely sparkly aura only seems to come alone, and not along with the pain. It's a good thing! When I can't see, I can still function, and when I have the pain, I can still see. Well, I suppose it's a relatively good thing ... smiley - tongueout

It *is* like a nightmare ... especially when you're in the middle of it, and crying because it just won't stop ... oh well, let's get on with our lives, shall we? Dacquiri?

When I had them, the sparkly aura came
first, then numbness and tingling on
one side of my body, and then the head
pain accompanied by nausea. I would
start taking the medication when the aura
started. By the time the headache was supposed
to start, the medication was already working
to block it.

Spending the whole afternoon or evening
in bed was the only option for me, as my
whole visual field was blurry, and any light
would be unbearable.

But I've only had one migraine since my
sophomore year of college. That was 34
years ago, so I'm happy about being rid of
the darn things. smiley - ok

Luckily out of that huge double batch of them, there were only a few left after I sent them home with everybody, so what was left was gone before I was even tempted.
