Since when was my life so hectic?!
Posted May 9, 2004
It's that time of year - assignments coming out of my ears and feeling like it'll never end, core trips most weeks that you have trouble focussing on because of all the other work you're meant to be doing, trying to keep up with work and make enough money to pay rent while living on 2 minute noodles and stale bread, and then this year it has become even more challenging - a lecturer accused me and my friend of plagarism (falsely, for the record!) and my boyfriend, the one I flew across the world to see for four months, has decided that his life is too busy to include me.
So, the stress levels are up, free time and sleep are both at a minimum, and I'm just trying to keep my eyes on the light at the end of the tunnel!!

The sorry state of my social life.
Posted Feb 15, 2004
I've only got two weeks left here - we went on our first date last night (after being together almost a year...), of course we forgot that it was fricking valentines day so there was a two-hour wait everywhere we went, we eventually gave up and ate pizza before we went to the school play - matt coaches the ski team and I come to all the practices (free skiing! ) so I know all the kids, some of them were in the play, so that was fun, then we went and had desert at a posh restaurant which was still packed at 11pm!
I just realised that my social life consists of Matt, his brother, two guys named doug and a bunch of high school kids.
I went down to new orleans last week - the french quarter was fantasmagorical but the rest of it was dead scary - I had guys try to solicit me, the hostel was the biggest dump ever - cockroaches and nasty things like that , and it poured with rain for two of the three days I was there so all the musicians went and hid.
I don't want to go home, only two more weeks though and then I'm leaving on a jet plane.

Oh, the bruises!
Posted Jan 22, 2004
Sometimes I wonder how it is that all the activities I enjoy result in enourmous bruises all over me.
I'm learning how to play ice hockey, so my knees are permanently purple, or rather an off-shade of brown - we've been out shovelling off the pond, we cleared 10 dump-truck loads of snow and now we have a rink bigger than an olympic-sized one!
I'm learning to tele ski, so I have bruises all down my sides from when I cross the tips or catch an edge, and we went sledding; hiked halfway up Mt Washington and then sledded down the Sherbourne, a 5km ski trail - a cushion would be a good idea next time!
Having a blast, don't want to go home, I'm even liking the cold; -20C...so cold that your nostrils freeze together and it hurts your lungs to take a deep breath!! Beats 30+ of summer, at any rate...!

What a w*nker!
Posted Nov 21, 2003
So the best thing about being foreign in an all-American workplace is that the British guy and I can bag out the boss without him even realising it!
Americans, apparantly, don't know what the word 'w*nker' means, so as long as you use a polite tone, it's taken as a compliment!
Brit (appreciatively): Hey Brian (the boss), you're a really good wanker mate!
Brian: Uh...thanks!
I've also been asked (by a bank manager) how to spell Australia, and been complimented (by a pharmacist) on my mastery of the english language... - although in general people have been interested and friendly, and tried to control their sniggers when I talk!

Off (like a warm fish milkshake)
Posted Nov 8, 2003
Finally! Bags are packed, ready to go - it's all been so busy that it's only just sinking in that in less than 24 hours I'll be on the plane and on my way! Very exciting, very scary...yay for adventures!
