I'm a what?
Posted Dec 4, 2001
It's recently been pointed out to me that I'm an ass.
I haven't decided where I come down on the issue.

High School Reflections
Posted Dec 1, 2001
I just spent some time browsing through Classmates.com. Since I quit in 10th grade, I only vaguely remember most of those people. I'd be really curious to go back and meet some of them. Public school was sort of a vague memory for me anyway. I always viewed it as an ordeal to be survived until I tuned 16 and could escape, and escape I did.
It strikes me as odd when I look through the little bio things and it says married with children. How can the people I went to high school with have children? I guess in my mind I still think of them as 16.
Maybe I do have a certain fondness for my vague memories of back then (I've always had a strong sense of nostalgia). I do have a strange fondness for high school movies, like The Breakfast Club and American Pie. That's probably because I didn't go through the whole deal. I have an outsiders view. It's an interesting look into what I never did.
This last weekend, I went back to visit my wife's hometown in Ohio. She grew up in a small town. I get a kick out of hearing her stories about high school. On the other hand, I see her friends from school. A lot of them don't seem to have done anything since high school. They seem to have gotten married, and started working, and that's it.
Maybe it's a skewed view of things. I'm 31. I've been a cop for not quite five years, and I still see myself as being at the beginning of my career. I look down the road and see all sorts of interesting vacation opportunities, lifestyle changes, and career opportunities. To me the future is exciting. I couldn't imagine doing the same thing day in and day out for the next two decades.

Thanksgiving Holiday
Posted Nov 28, 2001
My wife and I just returned from a holiday visiting her family in Ohio.
We arrived on Wednesday and went to the Star Wars: The Magic of Myth* exhibit. It's an exhibit on tour from the Smithsonian
National Air And Space Museum* at the Toledo Museum of Art*. It was pretty cool. It had a lot of props from the movie there. It amazes me how cheesy the props look in real life, but in the movies they're amazingly cool. In one room, I was looking at young Anikan's costume. His helmet was a cheap looking plastic thing, but in the movie poster that was there with it, it looked great.
We enjoyed the holiday with the in-laws. We even got in a few board games. I love board games.
On the day after Thanksgiving, we did go do the mandatory day after Thanksgiving shopping. We didn't get up early enough for the really good deals.
We live within a mile or two of US Highway 23, as does my wife's family. It's just that our homes are 800 miles apart. I thought it might be nice to take the scenic route back. It was a nice trip through the Apaplchan Mountains. I like travelling and seeing new places. There's something about little towns nestled in valley's that fascinates me. I think its fun to stop at little tourist spots along the way.
One of our stops was the Biltmore Estate*. It's a huge private home that you can tour. The tour was nice, if a bit overpriced. I didn't think the overall tour was worth it. General admission was $34 a head. The behind-the-scenes tour for $11 was a really cool look at Victorian life. If you go, definitely take it.
From there we continued on south to Georgia. We stopped at Black Rock Mountain State Park*. It had a majestic view, but the ranger was closing up as we pulled in. We snapped a few pictures before coming on home.
It was a nice trip. Since I was raised by my father away from any extended family, I particularly enjoy family holidays with an extended family.

I need a break
Posted Oct 12, 2001
**Warning vent coming**
Some days I really feel like I need a break from these pathetic pacifists. I guess we should let anyone who wants to maul our nation. Don't worry, we won't do anything about it.
Then we have the liberals who want to control our lives. They want to take money from people who earn it, and give it away to pathetic wretches who've made decisions that led to them winding up on the bottom rung of society.
While we're at it, we'll limit free speech with political correctness. Then we'll outlaw firearms. Let's leave our citizens unprotected from criminals and tyrants.
Of course, we have the bash America crowd, who wouldn't have a kind word for us if we were giving away chocolate covered gold. Of course, no one cares if you insult Americans and use derogatory language about them; that's acceptable to the moderators.
Isn't there a little place somewhere, it doesn't have to be a big one, where people appreciate liberty and honor, but they're not afraid to show a little backbone?
Screw it.
**Fair warning: this is a vent responding to this will probably get you flamed. **

Birthday
Posted Oct 4, 2001
We celebrated my birthday last night. I opened my presents. Dad gave me some pruning shears. I think he's trying to send me a message. Then we went out to eat at the Olive Garden.
Then Bev took me ice skating. I'd never been before, and I can't say I much care for it. Give me roller skates any day of the week. I told her about Oak Park in Portland. I want to go back there sometime soon.
Anyway, we played a couple of games at the rink, came home, and...
