Amusing Interlude
Posted Jul 11, 2002
I don't usually share cop stories here, at least not the current ones. This struck as kind of funny.
Earlier tonight I was checking one of our parks. We've had some problems, and we're strictly enforcing the closing time. If you're there after that, we run the people out. I saw two cars in the parking lot, so I pulled in and parked. First I checked the bathrooms. We've had some graffiti in there form men soliciting sex from other men. No one was there. So I walked around behind the bathrooms. They're in a high point of the park, and standing behind them you can see most of the park if it's light outside. I heard some whimpering. I couldn't quite figure out where it was coming from.
I started walking down into the shadows. I was moving quietly. I still heard the noises. I didn't know what I might be able to turn up. Finally I saw them, two people at a picnic table. One was sitting, and one was standing. I couldn't see if they were talking or what. Then I noticed a funny motion like a dog humping a leg. Of course, he wasn't humping a leg. The girl had her legs spread.
I identified myself as the police. I gave them a couple of minutes of darkness to compose themselves before I illuminated them. They were laughing. I'd be scared out of my wits if I was caught mid-coitus by the police. I ran them off.
It just tickled me a bit.

Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones
Posted May 16, 2002
Tuesday afternoon we set up camp in front of the theater. My wife and a friend of hers like to line up for the Star Wars movies. This time it was set up by the official Atlanta fan club [http://www.hothlantarebels.com].
I enjoy the movies, but I went along mostly to be with my wife.
We spent the night talking about Star Wars, playing games, watching the old movies, and being interviewed by the press.
When more normal people started lining up yesterday afternoon, the fan club had set up several games including charades and Star Wars Jeopardy.
Then we finally got in to see the movie. It was good, but it left something to be desired. Lucas has a problem with dialogue. Obi Wan kept telling Anakin the same thing over and over again. The love story was very thin. I think it could have used some more development and exploration. The action was quite good. The climatic light sabre fight was faster than I could follow. The underlying political situation was more complex than anything that I thought that Lucas would do. I thought that was quite good.
All and all, I liked the movie. The silly lines and thin love story were all forgotten after the action at the end of the movie.

Respecting Wisdom and Fear
Posted May 10, 2002
The older I get, the more I've learned to respect my elders. I've learned that to disregard the advice of those with more experience and wisdom can be perilous. I used to think I could work through any probelm with reason. When I look at something I've done, and I fear that something may be amiss, I no longer dismiss my fear and think that everything is fine. Fear is older than thought.

Star Wars Celebration II
Posted May 9, 2002
I went to Star Wars Celebration II over the weekend in Indianapolis. I was not impressed. The operations side of it was totally screwed up. Every morning, there was a line outside the con just to get in. Once you were inside, you had to wait in line for tickets to the major events so that you could get into line for the actual event.
Some of the events were pretty good. There were more previews for the movie, and it looks like it will be pretty exciting. Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) MCed the main events. He's pretty entertaining in his own right. One of the highlights of the show was Carrie Fisher.
Carrie Fisher doesn't do cons very often. I heard that she had a really positive experience at a signing, and that probably encouraged her to come to this convention. This time, though, there were lines with 6 hour waits to get her signature. The way I here it, they had her practically chained to the desk doing those autographs. It didn't sound like fun to me. It seemed like the actors who do the panels get a lot more out of the con.
Anthony Daniels and Carrie Fisher talked for a half an hour, and they were really entertaining. I generally don't think much of actors. Mostly they just read lines. She and Anthony Daniels were really entertaining.
All and all, we had some fun, but the lines and disorganization were too much. I don't think we'll be doing Celebration III.
