Here, it has lost its more general meaning.
I've used a proper outhouse, when I was younger. It was at my grandparents' farm in West-bygod-Virginia. It can't remember if it had a crescent moon in the door, I don't think it did. But I seem to remember it did have a few dried corn cobs in the corner... just in case. 
What I know it had was about a million daddy-longlegs clustered in the dark corners.

I have a daddy longlegs family in my bathroom. I don't know what attracts them to such places, but I don't mind them as long as they don't build webs around my refrigerator too

Just the other day it was discussed on my radio why we say "into the living room" but "out in the kitchen" (in Danish at least).
Clue: Back in the olden days the food was cooked in an - you guessed it - outhouse.
One of the reason being to keep the living room, bedrooms, furniture etc. out of harms way of the open fire used in a kitchen

we DO say "bog"(for toilet) Bob
but "outhouse" to us is usually a brick built one next to house and used for tools/storage etc, a "shed" is the wooden type and is in't garden
