That's right if you drink a lot of coffee Bel.
My mum isn't allowed to do so, so the coffee pad machine is quite good, it does keep her from drinking too much coffee....
( a lot of coffee means in that case, it is too expensive if you drink more than 2 or 3 cups of coffee/day)

I drink a whole lot of , matodemi, which is why I decided against this system.
Mala, I still have this option, too. Plus I have a Bodum coffeemaker.

Thanks, Bel, for that link.
So, it's like tea bags with coffee instead. These have been around for years, nobody buys them. Coffee goes stale too quickly.
The only way to get a good cup is to buy good coffee and grind it yourself just before you make it.
If all you want is convenient caffeine, buy one of those energy drinks in a can.

I have a small tea pot that I make coffee in. Put the coffee into the pot like loose tea. When the kettle crackles, (full boil is too hot, it makes bitter coffee) I put the water in and let it steep a minute. I have a cone filter holder that sits atop the mug. While I pour, I stick my face into the steam. mmmmmm

Bel, I do fully understand why you keep to your coffee machine - at the moment I use mine for my morning coffee (it has a timer, so coffee is ready when I wake up) - in the afternoon I use my espresso machine (christmas present from my kids).
The weekends I drink more coffee, so it is only coffee machine...
I don't take the time to handbrew my coffee, just don't like standing around in my kitchen...

Yes, doing it by hand is for emergencies like a broken part of the coffee machine. We have an espresso machine at work, but I wouldn't want one for my home: they're too noisy.

Well, I guess there's two kinds of people, those who can slow down enough to savour life and slow coffee, and you unfortunate others.
It's like the Japanese tea ceremony which is not about tea but the meditative opportunity that comes with performing some physical task that requires no thought in itself.

I quite like yer basic filter holder cone jobs. I have a filter machine, too, but there's something about the simplicity of design and functionality of the cone that means I use it more.
Plus "plink, plink, plink" sounds nicer than "gurgle-splock-gurgle".

I'd gotten Tom one of those thingies you just set on top of a cup and pour through a while ago, since he's the only coffee drinker in the house. We tend to use the coffee pot more (just making the minimum) but the thingie came in very handy for camping

I go with Post: 206 - put ground coffee in a pot and pour hot water over it. However, I don't bother to filter it, just leave it to stand and then pour. I haven't calculated how much I have saved on filters and the like and it hasn't killed me (yet)!
Since I started making it like that (in Yemen, in 93, where coffee paraphernalia wasn't available but the most superb coffee was), I have never made it any other way and can't understand what all the fuss was about before!

In many ways, coffee (and tea) are like certain varieties of alcohol. People like to be incredibly precious about them and how they are produced to show their sophistication, not to improve the beverage itself.

i am in the process of experimenting with cold brewed coffee. I'll let you know how that works out. (put coffee and water in a container, let it sit for a while and filter it out. Then take the resulting liquid and mix it with hot water.) apparently it makes the coffee less acidic.

I know one h2g2er who does that and swears it makes the best coffee he's had.
