hey sal.
you cant do that. where will we go when we do get round to thinking of our past?
we are all a bit stale with one thing and another and not being able to get in here as often as we would like.
but this is one thread that has kept us all amused as we reminise(spelling)
we have covered many subject in the 1000 postings on here and im sure with some thought we can get it up to the 2000th.
so come on freinds... get your thinking caps on.
blimey. thats an old saying. anyone remember any more??????

I agree Don't close it sal!
Our memory test is tougher on us but surely not over!
* tries to remember how to work well under pressure*
hi sal.
Smudger879n Posted Apr 1, 2004
Remember those days when they used to fill your car for you at the filling stations??
and wot happened to that bucket and sponge they used to leave out so that you could wash your windscreen
Now to cap it all, I went to put air into my tyres last week, and its now a computerised system
which takes longer as you have to keep running back to the machine to re-set the pressure for each wheel!!

Oh good direction for the thread!
Old sayings
My dad would always say;
" you would make a better door than a window"- when I was blocking his view of the TV or something else.
"Born in a barn?" - when leaving the door open
hi sal.
Paganmoon - Crazy as Ever Posted Apr 2, 2004
evening abbi...
those sayings are said over here too luv.... another one for blocking the view here is, "you weren't made/born in st. helens" ...... st. helens being the home of the pilkington glass factory here in the north of england.....
hope you are well my friend.....
hi sal.
smurfles Posted Apr 2, 2004

Paganmoon - Crazy as Ever Posted Apr 2, 2004
oops, sal....
maybe you would remember, "he couldn't stop a pig in a ginnel", refering to someone with bow legs.... (a ginnel being an narrow alleyway for you non northern folk.... lol.... but i think lancashire and yorkshire share a lot of old slang)
hi sal.
abbi normal "Putting on the Ritz" with Dr Frankenstein Posted Apr 3, 2004
You would forget your head if it was not screwed on.
You got your head screwed on backwards?
If your brain was in a bird it would fly backwards
hi sal.
serenity Posted Apr 3, 2004
sheryl.
thanks for explaining what a ginnel is
i bet there are many words that are from different areas that we never hear.
being a brummie.
there are many, but i cant think of them right now.
the only one i can think of is that people often call a 'canal'... a 'cut'.
now that i live in telford, there are a few local sayings as well. those born and bred in the dawley area can often be heard
saying 'ow bist?' or 'ow bist thee?'
which is how are you?
hi sal.
Paganmoon - Crazy as Ever Posted Apr 3, 2004
hi helen....
we call a "canal" a "cut" here too....
it's hard to write dialect down.... i think a lot of the young ones are losing the old dialect these days, which is a shame... it should be taught in schools i think, to learn them about their roots....
