el D - I think our word is a favourite of some minor and humourous old character in a John Wayne movie - 's how I first heard of it.

I think it was also used in one of the carry on films, by Kenneth Williams

In the parody "Bored of the Rings," D*ldo was the uncle of Frito.

Sorry if my post was confusing - I was referring to el D's word 'hornswoggle' in 128, which I'm sure the Prof was right in his reference to its use by Kenneth Williams in one of the Carry On films too.

And our other word....here's Wikipedia's version of its etymology:
"The etymology of the word dildo is unclear. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) describes the word as being of "obscure origin". One theory is that it originally referred to the phallus-shaped peg used to lock an oar in position on a dory (small boat). It would be inserted into a hole on the side of the boat, and is very similar in shape to the modern toy. It is possible that the sex toy takes its name from this sailing tool, which also lends its name to the town of Dildo and the nearby Dildo Island in Newfoundland, Canada. Others suggest the word is a corruption of Italian diletto (for "delight")"
Hasn't Newfoundland changed the names of its town and island yet? In the 60's a Kentish village called Pratt's Bottom changed its name rather sharpish, in spite of local protests, thus giving away the mentality of the County Councillors concerned.

Maybe those towns in Newfoundland could change their name to Diletto.

Mianus is an unincorporated community in the US state of Connecticut.
Mianus was featured in a segment of the MTV show Jackass in which Johnny Knoxville made fun of the town's name by pronouncing it(can't say)

There's a joke about a commuter train that is pulling into the station in the town of Urelia. The conductor in the front of the train prnounces it as "You're a liar," while the one at the back calls it "You really are!"

Reminds me of a tale my father told me.
On the rail line between Preston and Blackpool, the first stop is peculiar. Turn right, and you get to Kirkham, turn left, and you get to Wesham.
Each time a train pulled into the station, one guard would call out "Kirkham", while the other guy called out "and Wesham"
Why couldn't one guy call out both exits????

with world travel as open and easy as it now is, there seems to be more foreign words and English words inter mixing to form new words, along with totally new meanings

When I was at College (Secondary Education) we were all given our own Atlas for geography. Many hours were spent looking for 'rude' place names. Flushing (Belgium, I think) and Shittim (Thailand?) caused particular hilarity!

I saw a program on TV a few year back and it was saying that companies scour the worlds languages, before launching a new product, in case the name offends somewhere

Emo is a word that I didn't hear much until recently. It's probably a generational thing, and I'm not in the generation in question. Or, more likely, it's involved with music trends that I didn't follow.
Key: Complain about this post
