*drums fingers at anti-religious comments*
Not literal fires I hope, Hyp. Unless she was telling someone how to re-wire a plug.

Sometimes you just need to resort to childish name calling.

You know, there is a way to protect against psychic vampires.
Shielding yourself.
No, I'm serious. Envision yourself surrounded by white light. Or blue, since that's the color of ArchAngel Michael (whom, by the way, you can also call to deal with Energy/Psychic Vampires). Or, alternatively, imagine yourself stepping into a ball of mirrors, which reflects all attacks back at the person from whom they originated -- doesn't hurt the person, mind; just returns the issue to them so they can deal with it on their own.
Shield yourself, okay? It's better than wasting energy on negative thinking.

Theoretical fires, Bagpuss. Public relations and politics. I'm always having to explain something over and over because people are told the wrong thing.
And I did say religion and intelligence can coexist. Since I'm Catholic, I am actually poking fun at myself. And I do think I'd make a great Pope. I'd focus on the good the Church does and get rid of the nonsense.

Wise words, Acetegan. F bought me a book on psychic self-defense ages ago. Right before he got sick the last time. Think I should read it?

Fiona Posted Aug 17, 2006
Yes.
You should also try to get hold of stuff by an author named Doreen Virtue. She's good on that issue, too.

Lady Chattingly Posted Aug 17, 2006
Baggers, I hope you didn't take my remarks as anti religion. I am definitely not anti religion--merely anti-religious fanatics. There seems to be an abundance of them in the Midwest--aka as the Bible Belt. Some of them carry their "beliefs" to the extreme--using them as an excuse to march against anything and everything. The Rev. Fred Phelps comes to mind. He has made it his mission in life to abolish any type of gay rights and he does this in the name of religion.
Didn't mean to get on a soapbox. Well, maybe I did.

Hyp "I nicknamed her smellfungus (which is a real word, by the way)"
I'm curious as to what kind of fungus it is and if it can be found on humans?

No offence taken, Lady C. I'm not a big fan of some of the American Christian groups (or indeed some from other countries). I was rather keen on a reported bumper sticker which read "The Christian Right is neither".

I wouldn't mind a bumper sticker like that. That saying would be good on a tee shirt, too.
A smellfungus is a person who sniffed things out, so to speak, in medieval times. A person always trying to find something wrong, the flaw in the argument, the misdeed, the mold on the bread so it could be pointed out and eradicated.
One of the main traits of my smellfungus is that she must think that contradicting everyone makes her look more intelligent. If there are 99 reasons why somethng is a good idea and 1 reason why it isn't, she focuses on the 1 negative aspect. And she tries to make people believe that in spite of what the rest think, she has some private information that she can't tell us but that will back her up. Because she's so special and important that she is privy to things the rest of us aren't allowed to know.

Oooh, blimey, Hyp, the 'Outbreak of Smellfungi' has reached this side of the Atlantic. Do you think she's been cloned? I know at least three people like that. One I don't even acknowledge anymore, one I have decided to feel sorry for and one i canna avoid she's a relative... oh and I just thought of another one - not female and not RL, more of a cyber smellfungus, if you like

I'm glad you explained the smellfungus, Hyp. The 'ex' exhibited the last part "...she has some private information that she can't tell us but that will back her up. Because she's so special and important that she is privy to things the rest of us aren't allowed to know."
That's a symptom of psychosis. Rev Phelps of Westboro has it, Ann Coulter (an excellent anagram of her name exists, btw) as well.
I suppose it would be called something else if the sufferer managed to keep a reasonable grip on reality, but there should be some type of social mechanism that squelches the self-styled 'charismatics'.
I personally have no motivation to think kindly of those people.
You have my condolences. I agree with the shield concept. Psychotics are impossible to deal with....

I just realized, we have a smellfungus out here. It comes in the form of SIL's stepmother...........Wow! Now I know what C. is! Thank you, Hyp. I have a description for her.

Hypatia Posted Aug 18, 2006
I know my smellfungus isn't unique in any way. It seems like there is an epidemic of smellfungusery in the world.
One good purpose they serve is to help us moderate our own behavior. Occasionally I'll start to do or say something and realize that that's the way smellfungus would react. Makes me stop and reevaluate.

I'm grateful for all the people in my life who have been examples -- good or bad.
Except that I always have a niggling suspicion I'm more like the bad ones!
