I find it disturbing that the mods removed that link straightaway, whilst letting people with similar attitudes be part of the site. Joshncaleb at least talked about other things too, however the 'preacher' is only here for one purpose.

i have had a resonable non preaching conversation with 'Justin the Preacher' he's ok..if he's not provoked....

I read his rather foolish comments on homosexuality, and referenced this thread to him. Hopefully he'll read (some of) the backlog and get involved or something.

i've taken the time to read what he's written on message boards..his bark is worse than his bite.

I wasn't sure whether to tell him about this place or not, but as a preacher who's already posted homophobic idiocies to h2g2, i thought he should come and (fail to) justify himself. I wouldn't be suprised if he ran away and hid like our friend Caleb though.

I put a lot of thought into my posts to Justin..felt a sense of achievement..that i got a nice reply from him..now feel all my efforts were wasted....

i'm not bored..i just don't think it was necessary to provoke Justin..his views maybe 'off the wall' but that's no reason..to offer him a red flag..knowing full well..he'll charge..you've given him exacly what he wanted..a hostile audience..he'll be in his element..

But he was not provoked into comments like 'the appalling anus-lust' and 'there are no perverts in Paradise' etc, he just came out with them in response to the title of an article. What he'd have said after having actually read it... Those sort of comments are not off the wall, they are insulting.

I suppose, but- at least the idea with Joshncaleb was to argue reasonably on their own terms (i.e. names and numbers, chapter and verse) and attempt to confound their arguments. And if possible affect a change of opinion. At least he won't find a receptive audience for his ideas.

Yeah, if this guy is expecting some dumb fools to take in what they're told unquestioningly, then he has come to the wrong place . Would racist opinions be tolerated/moderated on this site? I suspect "no". Whereas there seems to be more willingness to allow homophobia. Why is this?

I hope we'd be allowed to give them something of a thrashing first, then they'd be mod'd. Apparently our Justin is used to being argued with, since what he says 'offends all pagans'. Riiiiight...
maybe because this attitude is so linked to religion, they're reluctant to interfere.
I'm sure there are plenty still using the Scripture to justify their racism though.

Going thru the threads last night turned up more incidences of homophobia than I'd expected. (coupled with the fact that m2m2 doesn't seem to have been dusted off for ages...)
btw tho', looking at that church website, clock what a pathetic amount of people there are at their famous pickets. Heartening.

I'd rather see ideas brought out than suppress them. When you suppress ideas on the fringe, they fester and you don't know about it until they're forced to do violence to get their message across.

We didn't harrass him because we disagreed. We tried (at least at first, before he started getting personal) to expose him to different ideas and suggest that he was perhaps misguided; or at least to the notion that if he said these things in public he'd probably get much harsher treatment than from us. This site is on the whole a fairly liberal place (societal, not political sense) and homophobia does not find a favourable audience. The point was to get him to realise the shortcomings of saying stuff like 'you chose that lifestyle and can expect to be ridiculed' etc. which were obnoxious, even with regard to personal freedom. Nowhere was he told 'shut thigob, clot', at least not without a reason why...
There was no suppression, but an attempt to bring ideas out as you suggest and discuss why he thought that way. And then argue on his own turf (i.e Biblical references). As for his ideas being different, opinion is one thing but is it really wise to let intolerance like that develop? That's what leads to terrorism, if anything. Oppressed and desperate groups do not have access to open debating forums with a wide spectrum of society/nationality.
