Yes, the cold here is beastly. It was about 18 below zero Centigrade a few nights ago. Tonight it will only be 10 below zero. In Fahrenheit terms, it will be about 6 degrees. That doesn't convey how bitter the cold is, though I would never complain to a Midwesterner, who would talk about far colder winter temps.

This is January. I wear two shirts, a jacket, and a trench coat, along with two pairs of gloves, two hats, and a scarf.

Every day is two minutes longer than the one before. That means that since December 21st, the sun has risen 17 minutes earlier and set 17 minutes later. In time this will add up. smiley - smiley

This afternoon I went to the movies to see "Walk With Dinosaurs." It was nice to see summer landscape, but later on there were scenes about dinopsaurs walking across ice and falling into a frozen lake. smiley - brr

You're quite welcome to stay, Prof. Thanks for the update, Paulh - I remember last year you had a lot of trouble, especially getting around to see your family. Hope they're OK, too.

Our temperatures are yoyoing but haven't seriously got below freezing yet. We are in a blessed corner of Europe on the Lower Rhine, and usually have 5 degrees C higher than even the local weather forecast predicts. Since Christmas, we have had one or two days of intense winter sunshine with beautiful sunrises and sunsets, which raises the spirits!

Please stay, Prof. Winter is a very isolating season. People huddle in their houses and wonder how others are doing. I make a point of doing out every day, but I can choose to venture forth during the warmest time of day. If I were still working, I'd have to travel when the boss wants me to.

There's room for you in the U.S., but the health service that you take for granted in the U.K. is wildly uneven here. If you have any special health needs, you're better off where you are. Unless you'd like to try Canada. I hope your French is in good shape.
