2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Posted Mar 7, 2003
...and as we were advised, when we had a lecture on voice, and looking after it (as part of the teacher training course), coffee, tea etc., arn't that good as they are dehydrating, and don't help lubricate the vocal chords so my voice is doomed
Actually I do drink an awful lot of water,
and an awful lot of coffee,
and, some would say, an awful lot of booze

Thats great advice Paul - when I trained as a Speech Therapist we used to give the same advice - if the water is iced even better. As to how effective this is - well I can vouch for it personally! It is what kept me going this week (even if I did have to visit the Ladies Room more fotne than usual!)
However care should be taken if talking through a soar throat - it should be avoided where it can be as even once you have used ice waer (which helps reduce the swelling on the vocal cords and ensure they are moist) they ae still potentially liable to get damaged - since the ice waer also has a numbing effect you become less aware of the damage you are doing them which can mean it takes longer to heal. This is why the anasthetic throat lozengers you can get may not be great for you - your throat gets soar to help encourage you to rest it and let it heal.
What we used to tell people is that if you had rested it as much as you could and used ice water and it was not better after a week you shuld go and see a to get it checked out.
I wish my phone would stop inging so I could actually b quiet today! Still I am talking less than the last two days!

Also good Points 2Legs!
I have given up caffine and have been off the booze this week
Oh and smoking does not help either as it is also dehydrating to the vocal cords.
Glad to hear voice coaching is nw part of teacher training - so many of my patients were teachers

It wasn't very extensive training we had, but at least it did notify us of potential dangers, so we could look at addressing them, and finding out more. Most of it seemed to make sense : Well, yeah, my smoking no doubt doesn't help
But I don't get too much problem with my throat; I had tonselitis a while ago, which was a pain, literaterly
and a sore throat a while after Christmas, which felt identical to the tonselitis, but cleared up after liberally sprinkling it with alcohol, nicotine and caffine
in act, most of the things I shouldn't have done
: but I normally get through two or three bottles of cold tap water a day; which is 500 ML per bottle, so most days a litre and a half

Bassman - Funny how people never ceases to amaze me! Posted Mar 8, 2003
A tip I heard for lubricating the vocal chords is warm black tea with honey in. Our vocalist uses this and can be seen sipping in between songs.

Everyone!
Now who is for a G&T?
yep thats right I have my voice back and am feeling fine - exhaused but fine! Life has been very hectic since I was last here.
I survived the week in Bournville and just about had enough voice to get me through all the facilitation I had to do! Evenings were manic - three work outings in one week. The weekend was not a lot quieter - except on the email front. I had some technical challanges - Tonto's employers are in my bad books - my phone line had been dowm over a week. I had my hair cut and now have had some blond moments put it! Saturday evening I went to see friends and then on Sunday I went to Olympia to a writing masterclass that was being run as part of the London Book Fair. It was fantastic - learnt a lot about the process of writing and what it takes to be a successful writer - now all I have to do is do some writing!
So far this week I have been on a course on Monday am, then I have been at a conference on change sine Monday afternoon. That was really hard work - on the work front and on the drinking front too - it was with the HR teams! Now I have three days off - bliss - time to sleep and then I dont know what and thats the best bit!
