Lighthousegirl - back on board

The only problem I have with Cider is the apples - I am allergic to them.

I have never had rose petal wine - rose wine yes - particularly fond of white zinfendel at the moment smiley - biggrin

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

When I was doing my CSE English we had to give a ten-minute talk about any subject we wanted. One of the girls in my class decided to talk about wine-making and brought in a bottle of her dad's rose petal wine from the previous year. Of course, we all had to sample it afterwards smiley - tongueout

Reminds me of a line from 'Carleton-Brown of the FO'. Peter Sellers is welcoming Terry Thomas and showing him around the island. At one point he's talking about the local wine-making industry and he pulls out a bottle: "And this is our finest wime - not a drop is drunk until it is at least three weeks old!"

I'm quite partial to White Zinfandel too, Lighters, although I've recently discovered a rather nice White Shiraz which I've become quite partial to. Unfortunately it was a bin-end, so I'll probably never find it again after I've finished the couple of bottles I bought.

Now, despite common rumour, I don't really drink a lot, but I recently realised that I'd become a 'regular' at a particular pub. I have a ferry journey followed by a bus journey to get home, and there's often a fair wait between the two, so I occasionally nip in for a quick pint to kill time. One night a few weeks back, I nipped in and was astonished to discover that the barman began pulling a pint of my 'usual' the moment that I walked in the door - I hadn't realised that it had reached that stage! Just to confirm it, when I had an early finish a couple of evenings later, the landlord greeted me with a cheery 'you're early tonight'. I suppose I will soon have to have my own pewter tankard and a seat of my own at the end of the bar, and woe-betide anyone unwary enough to sit there...

Just as long as they don't start shouting 'Parrfers!!!' when you walk in the door a la Norm from Cheers smiley - tongueout

Speaking from the other side of the bar, a good bartender will derive a lot of staisfaction and pride in a job well done by getting to know the regulars and what they drink. There were several at the City Barge, some of whom you could set your clock by, and they always drank the same drink, except for one bloke who drank Courage Best unless we had Greene King IPA in as a guest beer. I think it was GK... my memory's a little hazy.

One thing I really miss about working in a pub is the Guinness drinkers. A true Guinness drinker will give you the nod when he's got about a quarter of a pint left so that by the time he's drained the glass you've finished pouring the next one smiley - biggrin It's almost like being an auctioneer - you've got to watch for the emptying glasses and the twitch of an eyebrow that says "I'm ready for my next one".

Don Malvado, so bitter my cat won't even lick me

The wine in I've bottled is zin blush.

I got a huge haul of bottles from work a few days ago and have an ample supply. I'll bottle the cider tomorrow. It had nearly finished fermenting now I think.

The blackberry wine is looking like it might be good

I'm a good bar holder-up, myself. I'd hate to work behind a bar. My hearing isn't brilliant, especially when there's a lot of background noise; besides which I have enough difficulty trying to keep my temper with sober customers.

I'm afraid I'd fall asleep in bars.....Not that they're boring, but that they usually have nice, dark wood panelling and a soothing ambience. Plus, any kind of alcohol makes me drowsy (I start from a fairly drowsy state anyway)....

Dragonfly. "A poet can survive everything but a misprint"-- Oscar Wilde

Hee hee hee ... I'd have PF's problems and Paul H's. For some reason, I have a hard time understanding certain people when they speak ... and I don't know why it's particular people.

Also, I know I'd fall fast asleep an hour after my shift as a bar keep has begun -- I took a bartending course in 2004 and by the end of the week, I was drinking tea at 7 in the hopes that I'd stay awake until 10.

It's the dim atmosphere plus the fact that I don't often see 10 p.m. ...

I haven't been about much lately, I'm afraid, and I can foresee that it may be a little while before I'm online much again, but it's nice to drop by and say hello once in a while. smiley - cider
