please don't tell her about my mates eating habits. grilled pork with white sauce, peas, carrots and potatoes is one of his favorites
you can tell he's not a fundamentalist, no?

Her family and is historically Jewish but for generations (at least since her parents) has been more erudite. She's fond of bacon so I don't think she'll mind your friend's diet. Her view is that traditional dietary restrictions were for health reasons and modern facilities no longer require these restrictions to be in place.
She guessed the stacked graves had to be a local thing as there is nothing in the Jewish tradition that would suggest it. If I get bored I might do some research on it. (Since I'm stuck at home anyway.)

Hi Capn! I was hunting on line and apparently it was a space issue for the stacked graves. There is no mention of if it was family plots or not but it didn't sound like it was.
This snippet sums it up better than any of the others I found:
According to one web site: “The oldest tombstone, which marks the grave of the poet and scholar Avigdor Karo, dates from the year 1439. Burials took place in the cemetery until 1787. Today it contains some 12,000 tombstones, although the number of persons buried here is much greater. The cemetery was enlarged a number of times in the past. In spite of this the area did not suffice and earth was brought in to add further layers. It is assumed that the cemetery contains several burial layers placed on top of each other. The picturesque groups of tombstones from various periods emerged through the raising of older stones to the upper layers.”

interesting how different cultures and religions deal with dead bodies. i recently heard of a nation or tribe, that actually feeds the bodies of their loved ones to carrion fowl in order to make the transition back to nature as fast and as natural as possible
i don't think this tribe will get many followers here in denmark

Well, they won't get many followers if they keep carrion on like that.
Then again, if the fowls are going to eat carrion anyway, why couldn't they eat Herbert Von Karajan (cariron)?

I guess it still beats the funeral banquets of old where it was the family's responsibility to chow down..
